Why should you always choose a traditional scenario for your vacation? A romantic getaway is a perfect excuse to explore a new corner of the world, though Paris, London and the Maldives have all been done before.

If you’re looking for romance, but want something different this summer, consider these 5 destinations – perhaps an unexpected choice, but we guarantee you’ll cherish the memories for a lifetime.

5 Unexpected Romantic Destinations This Summer

Denmark

Strange as it may seem, we’ll start with Northern Europe, and with good reason. Aarhus, the country’s second-largest city, has been chosen as European Capital of Culture for the year 2017 so you will have an eventful time there.

If you want to experience coastal life, visit the West Jutland; it is a perfect area for sailing a yacht. By all means, you need to go to the heart of Viking civilization, Copenhagen – it has anything even the pickiest tourist might want.

Another don’t-miss site is the island of Funen with its historical center in Odense, where Hans Christian Andersen was born.

Myanmar

Formerly known as Burma, this state in the heart of the Southeastern Asia gives the insight into the unknown world. Although Myanmar is not as publicized as neighboring countries, it hosts some very special attractions.

Yangon was its capital city until 2006 and you should try the local mix of Asian and British colonial flavors. Shwedagon Paya, one of the iconic Buddhist temples decorated with gold and diamonds, is situated here so make sure it’s on your must-see list.

Mandalay is considered to be the cultural heart of Myanmar: it’s full of religious and historical sites and many different traditions meet there. Of course, this land is also rich in wonders of nature like Mount Popa National Park, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (or the Golden Rock), and the picturesque Inle Lake.

Sicily, Italy

Seductively beautiful and perfectly placed in the heart of the Mediterranean, we can highly recommend romantic couples head to Sicily for your holidays. The largest of the Italian islands, it has long seduced travelers with its natural wonders and cultural treasures.

It boasts wonderful weather, and a diverse range of culinary influences. Natural wonders abound here, and the juxtaposition of sea, volcano and mountain scenery makes a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities.

The island is full of history, bursting at the seams with ancient artistic and architectural gems. When it comes to ancient Greek architecture, Sicily actually rivals Greece.

Switzerland

It’s interesting how cultural influences of Germany, Italy, and France are combined here. However, Switzerland has its own soul and bright history. It is also wrong to think of this country as of the large ski resort only.

The Alps occupy most of its territory so you can stay in lovely villages and swim in crystal-clear lakes. Colossal glaciers and Rhine Falls, the largest European waterfall, look great in summer too.

The warm season is good for walking around the medieval old town of Bern or numerous art spots of Zurich. Such cities as Lugano, Lucerne, Geneva, and Lausanne host exclusive spa resorts, yacht clubs, and chocolate shops, of course. Airport transfers in Switzerland are very easy to book in advance.

Morocco

Long for significant cultural diversity? This land used to be part of the ancient Mediterranean Empires, part of the Islamic world, and a French colony so medieval Moorish heritage and classy European style are beautifully combined here.

Marrakesh, or the Red City, will amaze you with its old mosques and palaces; don’t also forget to take a walk across the Majorelle Garden that gave inspiration to Yves Saint Laurent. Fez, the former capital and second-largest city, is the local cultural and religious center famous for its exotic marketplaces.

Check out the coastal towns of Tangier, M’dig, Essaouira, Tétouan, and Tamuda Bay – they provide visitors with the unique experience, as well as the Dadès Valley with its authentic Berber villages.

  1. Places I never thought of visiting as I am stuck on Hawaii or just driving down Highway 66 in Texas and just stopping when we feel like it. No, phones or computers and actually getting to know each other again. Because with a child I feel like we have lost ourselves at times.

    • Hawaii and Texas sound like beautiful destinations to live and reconnect with family Glenda :) If you are looking for ideas for a getaway, I’m glad we could introduce you to a few new places to add to your list.

  2. Somehow, I think we need to avoid Burma (I won’t use the military junta’s name) – because, even with Aung Kyi in charge(?), it’s human rights abuses are rampant.

    • I’ve personally never believed in boycotting a country for it’s government’s actions; there are so many regimes out there which I don’t agree with, across the world, and I’ve found that in the majority of countries, the government is not always representative of its people.

I still find it important to travel and immerse, and connect, and in countries which are fighting against political oppression, I feel this is a good way to gain a first hand perspective, and come back with stories and information which can help highlight and shed light on it throughout the rest of the world.

  3. Really like how diverse your selection of five are – city breaks, landscapes, culture and history, near and far. I’m keen to go to Denmark soon, particularly Copenhagen but also other locations. And I’ve been wanting to go to Myanmar for a while as I have a Burmese friend who’s introduced me to the cuisine and she shares a lot about the country too. Sicily I visited many moons ago, would be great to go back. Morocco, likewise, I’ve been to Marrakesh, Casablance, Fez but there’s much more to see there for me. Switzerland, I’m less drawn to, not because it’s not beautiful — it totally is — but because I think much of it’s beauty is most accessible to those who hike!

    • Sounds like you have quite a lot of adventures coming up for your next trips! I love returning to destinations I’ve previously visited, to explore parts of the country I missed, and see how things have changed since my last trip.

I’m so glad you enjoyed our list!

  4. Hi Megan, I loved this post – definitely gave some great inspiration for romantic travel destinations. I’ve always wanted to go to Denmark (I keep on seeing sale fares to Europe, maybe it’s time to buy some tickets!) the architecture looks amazing and there’s so much history!

    • Thanks MG, I’m glad we could inspire you! Denmark is an incredible country, Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities in the world. The architecture really is beautiful, and there’s so much rich culture, nature and food.

Definitely recommend jumping on one of those cheap fares soon! :)

  5. In this list, I’ve only been to Denmark, although not to Aarhus unfortunately. And I’m surprised Morocco is here. I didn’t think of it as romantic in any way. But I have seen photos and the country’s gorgeous! Definitely have to visit sometime.

    • I think like any country, Morocco is romantic if you find the right part :) Also depends on what both yourself and your partner are into. It’s such a beautiful country, personal I recommend traveling to!

  6. Agreed! It’s nice to think of places that are a bit less traditional for a romantic vacation. We have really been wanting to visit Myanmar and Morocco–both look so exciting with a ton of great things to do. Thanks for so many great suggestions!

    • Absolutely Jenna – the traditional vacations usually all blur into one, but it’s these out of the both, exotic locations which really stand out as great memories throughout the years :)

  7. These are certainly romantic places. Sicily is my favorite. I have yet to visit Denmark. Switzerland is great for nature lovers. It s a bit pricey for me. Morocco is a place I visited with my ex and it is magical.

    • Hope you have the chance to visit Denmark soon Barb – awesome that you’ve managed to make it to the others on the list! :)

  8. I love the diversity of these options. My personal favourite is Myanmar as it blew my mind but I could be tempted by Sicily

    • Sicily is tempting for sure – a really authentic cultural experience too :) So glad to hear you enjoyed Myanmar – it has that effect!

  9. I just came from Morrocco and it was really romantic for me, OMG, sicily is also really good. I remember telling my friend then, if someone proposes to me here, I would definitely say yes.

I wish I could visit Myanmar and Denmark too.

    • Awesome Karla! So glad to hear you enjoyed Morocco and Sicily! Fab proposal destinations for sure.

Hope you have the chance to visit Myanmar and Denmark soon too :)

  10. Out of all of these places I would most love to go to Switzerland. I’ve heard the summers there are amazing. It’s high on my list of places to visit!

    • I can personally attest to summer in Switzerland being incredible – the scenery is as if torn straight from the pages of a fairytale – it’s unreal!

  11. I’m always looking for offbeat places to go as a couple! I think that most places can be romantic as long as you’re with the right person! Almost anywhere I guess lol. I really want to go to Denmark :)

  12. Great suggestion on the list and the sad reality is, I never been to any of these places so Thank you for giving me an Idea. I’ll probably start in Myanmar, planning to visit next year :) then Morocco. And ofcourse These European countries. Hopefully, with someone I can bring on a romantic date :)
