Most travelers understand the importance of switching off data roaming when you’re traveling overseas. And for those who don’t, it only takes one $700 phone bill for this realization to hit hard!

Yet having access to mobile data is perhaps even more important for those who travel. That connection means access to information, money, and methods of communication when you find yourself in a foreign land. It’s how we organize everything from where to eat to finding a route to the hotel. Mobile data has become such an integral part of our daily lives that most of us would be lost without it. Especially overseas.

So when it comes to hacks for finding cheap mobile roaming abroad, last year we brought you news of a company called Flexiroam, who offer a data roaming solution that lets you earn free data before you travel, avoiding huge roaming fees overseas. It’s a new approach to travel sim cards where you can earn 100 GB of free data to use in over 120 countries around the globe.

And while we were incredibly impressed by the app in November, Flexiroam have just released a major app revamp (March 1 2017) offering even more free mobile roaming while you’re overseas!

If you haven’t heard of Flexiroam X, check out our November 2016 review which explains exactly how it works and what it is. Click here.

You receive a starter pack with a thin micro-chip which easily sticks to your regular SIM card (this does not affect the performance of your regular SIM). Once you attach the X Microchip to your regular SIM, you essentially have two SIM cards operating in your phone, and can access mobile data from over 120 countries in the world when you connect to the Flexiroam X SIM.

You can toggle back and forth between both SIM cards without having to physically remove the card from your phone. You’ll only have to apply the Microchip once, and you can keep it in your phone forever, whether you’re using the Flexiroam X SIM or not.

It’s a great way to roam internationally for as little cost as possible. It’s a LOT more convenient than having to physically switch between different SIMs, and because it’s a celluar service you don’t have to scramble to find free Wi-Fi overseas; you have data anywhere 4G coverage is present. New Features With the Flexiroam X App Update

New Design

Along with a range of new features, the Flexiroam App has been completely redesigned. While it was simple and slick to start with, the red interface has been replaced by one which is a clean white, and offers navigation in a simpler and more straightforward way.

From the main home page of the app you now have options to refer friends for more data, order your link starter pack, and track your order. It continues to display your balance of data as it did before.

The menu bar at the bottom of the screen allows easy navigation to check coverage, status, your account details, and make internet calls. With their new design, they’ve made the app simpler and a lot easier to navigate.

What it Was:

What it Looks Like Now:

Data Usage

A new feature of the app allows you to assess how much data is the right amount for you, even before you purchase a Starter Pack, or decide to pay extra data through the app.

Whether you’re considering 500 MB, 1 GB, or 3 GB, it provides examples of exactly how much usage you can expect for this much data, ie 1.5 million instant text messages, 11,000 emails, 4,000 photo uploads, 22 hours of internet calls, 10 hours of music streaming, or 200 hours of map navigation.

Particularly helpful, because who really knows what 1 GB of data means!

Earn More Free Data

Flexiroam is giving a hefty amount of free data on this latest update. If you register your account today you earn 100 MB. If you link your account with Facebook you earn 400 MB. And you can earn more data for every referral you do.

Among the new ways to earn free data, you can also earn 1 GB if you refer 5 people within the 24 hours of your registration. To claim this, your friends will need to download the app using your referral link and sign up.

This is much more convenient as previously your friends needed to key in a referral code to get their free data. Now you can forward a download link and all they have to do is sign up. Your referral link is available from the homepage of the app.

Flexiroam X app update

Internet Calls

The most exciting new feature of Flexiroam X app is the ability to make internet calls. From March 21 2017 you’ll have the ability to make local or international calls to any mobile or landline phone over the interest using your data balance.

You can add your caller ID, save contacts, and view your call history all from within the app. It displays your rate on the screen so you can manage and keep track of how much data you have and how much you’re spending per minute on each call.

Login With Facebook, Google or Email

With the new update you can now login with one click via Facebook, Google, or using your email address. You no longer need to login with your mobile number and password.

This feature is a lot more convenient and means faster access to mobile data when you’re on the run.

Status

We now have access to a status page which shows the current connection details, as well as the partner network country you’re in.

Track Order

Once a starter pack has been purchased you can now track the order in the app and check on the shipping status.

This provides ease of mind that it’s on it’s way, and allows you to make plans for earning your free data before you leave for your trip.

Account

All other features of the app are located in the account page. Whether you’re looking to refer friends, apply a promo code, choose a payment method, manage transactions, access suport, or log out.

  1. This looks great. I need the internet when I am traveling and I have had a few crazy bills and a few unfortunate mishaps where I relied on the kindness of strangers to help me. Flexiroam looks like a safe and reliable and affordable option to assist me as I travel.

    • Flexiroam is fantastic for kicking those crazy bills to the curb … and also for safety – it’s a great thing knowing you have roaming where-ever there’s a cell signal, especially if you can’t find a local to help :)

  2. These days traveling without data is like death! Hahhaha, I don’t even know how I used to travel without a phone. Flexiroam sounds like a reliable and amazing option to have for my next travel destination.

    • Haha isn’t it though!! We’ve become so accustomed to it that I don’t know if people even remember what we did or how we sourced answers before!

Flexiroam is incredible for having a reliable and affordable source of data abroad. Definitely check the app out :)

  3. I’ve been looking into having some sort of data plan, just for those days that I have no wifi. I really haven’t had too many negative experiences with not having data, but those one or two times were biggies! I love that it tells you exactly what you can send/do with the amount of data. This may be on my shopping list for my next trip!

    • We’re the same – most of the time we can probably get by without needing to access phone data, but there are times where we’ve desperately needed it, and having that access can be a lifeline :) Or at least make most problems you face overseas a whole lot easier and quicker to solve!

I love the ability to track data usage too – such a handy feature!

  4. In the modern world of social media and emails, we have to be online all the time. This seems like a very good solution for travelers.
But also, sometimes we should stay offline ;)

    • It’s the best solution to mobile roaming we’ve found :)

And agree with you – especially when traveling, we do need to remember to take time to put the phone down :D

  5. This would be a super useful app to have, as I hate having to struggle wifi to wifi spot. I will have to try it on my next international stint!

    • Remember to order a starter pack a little beforehand so you have enough time to build up a bank of free data :) Happy travels!

  6. What a cool app! This would be great for anyone without an international data plan. Living in Canada, there aren’t even any international data plans to choose from, beyond those terrible plans by the day or the week. Not an option for people who travel!

    • Australia’s not got the best options either, so Flexiroam is a god send!

  7. What a great app. I was just reading on Tales Of a Fork about a way to use Google Maps without data which is super appealing but it’s also good to be able to access data if/when you need it. Will definitely check out this app.

    • Yep, Google Maps works without data if you download the area beforehand :) Super easy to stay connected with an app like Flexiroam though because then you don’t have to think about anything in advance :)

  8. This is a great. Traveling without data these days is like going back to the postcard times. And finding a cheap roaming plan or an alternative is quite tedious. Flexiroam may prove to be a convenient and affordable option.

    • Haha I sent a couple of postcards yesterday :D But yes, finding a cheap roaming plan or an alternative is quite tedious, and in the age that we’re in where data is almost expected, I’m surprised that Flexiroam is the only company solving the issue.

  9. Have seen people use skyroam and I actually borrowed it for a day trip in Edirne. Loved it. This app seems cool as well would love to try it!

    • Let us know what you think :) Happy travels!

  10. This app sounds amazing! I typically use a hotspot device when traveling, but with this app there is no extra device you have to worry about, or having to charge said device. This definitely seems like a convenient alternative.

    • Absolutely – being able to consolidate devices is a huge perk – much more convenient being able to travel with less :)
