Photography Essentials in the Modern Day

Digital photography has exploded in popularity in the last decade, and traditional film prints are now almost obsolete. Sharing your travel photos today is a simple click away thanks to how far photography technology has come, and gone are the days where you almost needed an advanced science degree to be able to capture beloved memories.

Long gone too are the days of physical photo albums where we would share our memories. Today they exist online via photostreams across various platforms, and it has been statistically shown that only 20 percent of digital images are actually printed on paper. Websites like Facebook and Instagram have become today’s photo albums which can not only be shared instantly with people across the world but are also free, making photography for the modern day person extremely affordable.

Though with the explosion of technology when it comes to digital technology the market is now saturated and it’s often difficult to know what you need and where to start looking. The following are our travel photography essentials – versatile and highly functional camera equipment which can also be used in your day to day life.

smartphone

The Smartphone

Whether you’re using an Android or iPhone, cameras in smartphones these days are now fairly on par to most decent point and shoots. It’s travel photography which is quite literally in the palm of your hand.

The smartphone is a fantastic choice of camera for those wishing to share their shots instantly without too much editing, though with the sleuth of applications now hitting the iPhone store, you can now edit your photos instantly too.

The DSLR

For more tech savvy folks who want a state of the art camera with built in Wi-fi and GPS, look no further than the Nikon D5300. It not only takes amazing pictures but also connects with your phone or tablet so you can share the photos instantly with your friends and family.

The Compact Super Zoom

The PowerShot SX50 HS is the pinnacle of the Canon Super Zoom compact range with a large 50x optical zoom range. This is the most versatile of Canon’s compacts and is great for a family camera or a traveler who wants great photos but doesn’t want to have to carry or change lenses on their camera.

Although we do also carry a DSLR, we use the compact superzoom for all wildlife photography, ad the picture quality is superb, and the zoom beats that of a DSLR without the need to purchase an expensive additional lens.

The Underwater Camera

Travel and adventure go hand in hand, and for any underwater adventure there is nothing better than carrying a GoPro. This is one item which should be on the top of your shopping lists yesterday.

On a recent trip to the Galapagos Islands we were set up with a Nikon Coolpix as well as a GoPro, the Nikon Coolpix being specifically built to handle underwater use. The seal of the Coolpix broke and as such we lost our photography. After online research we realized this is a fairly common issue with this brand.

We had absolutely no issues with the GoPro, and the photo quality which came out from the tiny camera which can fit in the palm of our hands is astounding! The GoPro gets an A+ for durability, versatility and underwater use.

Use Which Extends Past Travel

While essential for your travels, the above photography equipment has now become essential too in every-day life, and you’ll find that investing in digital technology will benefit you well beyond your travels.
