After having walked the length of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as well as downing our yearly limit of fine wines in Napa Valley, it was time to say goodbye to California and continue north into Oregon.

Travelling north along the famed Highway 101 towards Portland, we passed through many small coastal towns including Eureka, Crescent City, and Bandon, all of which offer decent accommodation for an overnight stop while passing through. Though there is one stop however which is an absolute must before hitting the rush of the big city; the hidden gem that is Gleneden Beach, Oregon; two hours southwest of Portland.  With lush pine forests and stunning beaches littered with beautiful agates and driftwood instead of trash, it is pure nature at its best.

After having spent a string of evenings in small motels and B&Bs, accommodation which merely got the job done, the Salishan Spa & Golf Resort of Gleneden Beach stands out like a much needed oasis of serenity and relaxation after having trudged north along the rugged Pacific Coast. It was a chance to recharge our batteries and take a moment to truly take in and experience the very best of the Oregon coast.

The resort is secluded and private yet close to many attractions in Newport such as the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Devil’s Punch Bowl, and Yaquina Bay. You may find yourself having trouble leaving the resort however as there are such an array of activities onsite which we found easily consumed our time. With an Audubon certified Golf Course, a gorgeous spa overlooking Siletz Bay, private beach access along with hundreds of hikable acres of nature trails, numerous on-site restaurants, complimentary mini golf course, indoor pool, tennis facility, specialty shops, kids game zone, and fitness facility, there is truly something for everyone here.

Of course we thoroughly tested the “Dance Dance Revolution”, multiple arcade games and air hockey tables which made up the kids game zone just to ensure they were all in working order…for the kids. Always thinking of the kids!

Catering to families, romantic couples and business retreats alike, even pets can enjoy the resort just as much as their owners with the abundance of hiking trails onsite. Offering three distinct options for guest rooms as well as several suites, all options are sure to impress. Incredibly spacious rooms are set up with all the amenities of a high class modern hotel, while maintaining the homey feeling of a personal cabin secluded by nature with breathtaking views and access to the forest.

We detached ourselves from the outside world and read a book beside the in-room fireplace while overlooking the bay and forested hillsides. We slept soundly as the warmth of the fire radiated throughout the entire room. Though for those who cannot quite detach themselves completely, each room of course includes complimentary high speed WiFi as well as a seriously large large flat screen television for that nighttime movie after the sun goes down.

Salishan Spa & Golf Resort was truly an escape, and we highly recommend a stay as the easiest way to discover the best of the Oregon coast. We were pampered by it’s fine restaurants and spa, and let our inner child out to play as heated games of mini golf and air hockey took over each day. We followed hiking trails down towards the Pacific and were tailed by harbor seals as we mapped out each secluded beach.

With beautifully manicured grounds and a welcoming, friendly staff, it is hard to believe that this resort could get any better.  This is however exactly what they are planning to do as they continue to improve upon their success by launching a multi-million dollar renovation to continue a commitment to providing an experience every traveler can enjoy.

  1. you did not show the incredible carvings on the walls
that go back to the early seventies
he was a very important artist in Oregon.. Roy Setziol
and my neighbor out in the country

    • How fantastic that Roy was your neighbor – he is certainly an extremely talented artist that’s for sure. We did love the carvings as we made our way around the resort – should have taken photos of them as we were admiring!

  2. Looks like a beautiful place to detach for a few nights. I lived in SF for 15 years, and somehow never made it up the Oregon coast. If I do, I now know where I am staying.

    • I hope you have the chance to visit the Oregon coast in the future – truly was one of the highlights of our road-trip so far :)

  3. What a gorgeous spot, I would love to spend a bit of time on their hiking trails and along that beach – although that would require dragging Drew from the golf course

    • Lol sounds about right :D We seriously spent the majority of each day on that golf course – it was one of the prettiest and most scenic I’ve seen. I’m horrible at the game itself lol but I was there for the view :D

  4. Looks like a really fun place to spend a couple of days…. especially with kids!

    • Oh absolutely – it’s the perfect spot for kids; between mini golf, the kids zone, the beach, hiking and the pool, it’s a paradise for parents who know the kids will stay entertained!

  5. That looks like a great place to relax! And, a good game of dance dance revolution is always fun… :)

    • That’s the one arcade game I could stay on for hours :D

  6. Looks like a nice place!

    • It really is! Highly recommend if you find yourself in the vicinity of the Oregon Coast :)

  7. Looks like a wonderful place to relax for a few days. Nice to have a place with wonderful food and hiking trails – my kind of place!

    • Absolutely agree – we’re huge into the hiking scene so loved that there was so much acreage right there on property :)

  8. Looks super comfy and relaxing! Glad you enjoyed your stay there!

    • Absolutely – those cabin fire place rooms were amazingly cozy – was just like home…but better :D!

  9. This looks like a great place for a getaway! I’ve never been to Oregon, must admit it never piqued my interest but now I’m curious!

    • Glad to hear – we had such a fantastic time, and if you’ve never been to Oregon you’re in for a treat! One of the most picturesque states in the USA :) Let us know if you’re looking for any further tips :)

  10. Looks just wonderful. I am jonesing for decent pillows where we are staying right not. If I could pluck the fluffy ones out of your photo, I would.

    • I love a hotel with good pillows – and this one definitely was great for that! Gotta be able to be comfortable when laying your head! I hope you manage to catch a decent night’s sleep – sending positive energy your way! :)

  11. This looks like a cute retreat. I would suck at golf but hiking and spending time on the beach would be bliss. So much of the USA I still need to explore. Thanks for the inspiration

    • Lol the funny thing is I do suck at golf, though it was still a blast anyway. Granted the disclaimer being I stuck to mini golf instead of the proper course, still lost hardcore but had a fantastic time :) I keep telling Mike I just let him win to save his feelings – secretly I could be a pro!

  12. What a cute spot! I haven’t made it that far north on the 101, but it’s definitely on my agenda. I’ll made sure to add this place to the list when we do.

    • Definitely plan for a trip further north – it’s such a beautiful part of the coast! :)

  13. Excellent review, Megan, of a wonderful place. As an Oregonian that frequents nearby Newport, I pass this resort quite often. It’s just as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside. I’ve had the pleasure of staying there and your post made me want to go back…now! I’m glad you mentioned the agates on the nearby beaches. My kids and I look for agates and fossils on those very beaches, which is a tradition my Dad did with me. Great post…brought back a host of great memories. Cheers!

    • Thanks Don, so glad you’ve had fantastic experiences with Salishan also :)

We had the most amazing time, it was definitely one of the highlights of our California road trip. Yes, loved searching for agates!

Thanks for stopping by our blog and leaving a comment – so glad we could help with a trip down memory lane!
