One of our favorite blogs, Justin + Lauren, recently posted about awesome places to visit in the Deep South. After having just returned from a lengthy US roadtrip ourselves, we can’t believe we missed some of these. Will have to head back!
The deep south in the United States has all sorts of hidden gems to uncover. You may not have heard of some of these destinations, but they definitely deserve your attention. And on the plus side, there aren’t huge crowds of tourists. Here are five spots in the deep south to add to your bucket list.
Saint Augustine, Florida
Saint Augustine is most known as the oldest European settlement in the country. Visitors can admire charming old architecture and take a stroll around its quaint downtown core.
Travelers can experience outdoor adventures on the bay, with activities like kayaking, canoeing, boating, and stand up paddle boarding. Be sure to take part in the nightly free walking tours of the city, with themes like pirates, romance, and ghost tours.

Mcallen, Texas
Mcallen is in the southern plains of Texas, near the Rio Grande River. It is a growing city dubbed the unofficial capital of southern Texas. It’s ideal for visitors that love art or nature. Mcallen is a haven for birdwatchers, with 528 different species spotted in the region. The Mcallen Art Walk celebrates local artists with a self-guided tour of neighborhood art galleries.
Art Walks happen monthly from September to May on the first Friday of each month. Similarly, Music After Hours is a free outdoor music concert featuring local artists, also on the first Friday of every month from September to May. Another event, the Texas Citrus Festival, offers sweet treats that you won’t want to miss.
Salisbury, Maryland
Salisbury is the biggest city in Maryland’s eastern shore region. There’s something to attract each member of the family. For sports lovers, Salisbury supports many local baseball teams, such as the Delmarva Shorebirds.
There are several parks where children can play and families can enjoy a picnic. For architecture lovers, take a stroll through some charming local neighborhoods to discover Victorian, Federal, and Georgian styles. Find a cheap hotel in Salisbury and enjoy exploring the city.
Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte is beginning to appeal to tourists with a growing amount of sporting events, concerts, and parks. Many NASCAR events take place in Charlotte, and it’s also home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Charlotte attracts many golf enthusiasts with a variety of golf courses. It is a very green city, with many parks with lush greenery all over town.
Not surprisingly, helicopter tours are becoming popular in the city. It is such a unique experience to fly over such a green place. There are many well-known concert venues where popular musicians play live, such as the Double Door and The Milestone.
Huntsville, Alabama
Huntsville has a large variety of activities and events, making it a great place to visit. At the US Space and Rocket Center, kids and teenagers can attend Space Camp, a week-long astronaut training program.
The Robert Trent Jones-Hampton Cove Golf Course is a spectacular course where golfers can play a round or two. There are also several theaters with a range of performances, with everything from famous plays to chorus musical productions.
