A Backpackers Tale’s Recommendations: Traveling in the Philippines For Cheap

One of our favorite blogs, A Backpackers Tale, recently posted his recommendations for traveling in the Philippines for cheap. We are happy to republish his post.

In recent years, the Philippines has become a traveling hotspot. This collection of over 7,000 islands is home to beautiful jungle vistas, soft sandy beaches, and warm ocean waters.

The Philippines also has a lively and vibrant culture to explore. With such an impressive resume it is no surprise just how popular these islands are nowadays.

I know this makes you want to stop reading and begin packing for the Philippines, but don’t start just yet.

Before you rush off to book your ticket, I want to talk about a few ways to plan a trip to the Philippines that won’t break your bank account. The first trick is getting a cheap flight to your destination. One of the best ways to get a cheap flight to the Philippines is to already be traveling around Asia.

Travel hubs like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur offer a lot more travel options and opportunities for people. However, it is still possible to use some budget hacks to find insanely cheap flights for travelers. Use companies like Air Asia and Jet Star Pacific to find the cheapest flights from almost anywhere is Southeast Asia to your destination in the Philippines.

Once you are in the country, the price of travel reduces drastically. This is due to the fact that the Philippines has extremely cheap internal flights. There are also a number of ferries available. Here’s a Philippines travel guide.

SLEEP FOR CHEAP

One of the best ways to save money while traveling is to find cheap accommodation. Use websites like Hipmunk to find cheap hotels in cities like Cebu, Pasay, and Lapu-Lapu. The good thing about using websites to do your research is that there are plenty of reviews and choices to consider that can lead you to finding a cheap place to stay without sacrificing a lot of luxury.

BUDGET YOUR MONEY

The key to traveling somewhere for cheap is to have a budget and then stick to it religiously. As mentioned before, traveling around, eating out, and finding the right hotel is relatively cheap once you get to the Philippines.

This means you don’t need a huge budget and can squeak by on as little as $20 a day.

GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH

You will save a lot of money in the Philippines by going to the lesser-known sites and places. You can use cities like Makati and Boracay as home bases and then head to the smaller areas nearby that aren’t as congested. Visiting places off the beaten path are often cheaper, and a lot of the sites are just as good as the main tourist attractions. You will also have the chance to interact with locals and immerse yourself more in the culture as opposed to just staying in the main tourist hub.

The Philippines offers so much natural beauty and wonder that everyone should go there at least once in their lifetime. Use these budget hacks when traveling to have the holiday of a lifetime and enjoy a bit of luxury, all without breaking your bank.
