What comes to mind when you think of the perfect wedding proposal? For many couples a romantic wedding proposal includes dinner with a view, a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne and a classic engagement ring from Vashi. But that’s not for everyone! Where should I propose?

Some couples prefer to live on the edge, so if you and your significant other are adrenaline seekers, here are 5 alternative adventurous proposal destinations.

Jordan

If you want to feel like you’ve walked directly on to the set of an Indiana Jones film, visit the stone city of Petra. You can walk there on the Trek to Petra, following Bedouin migration paths and remote hunter’s routes through the wilds of Jordan before you reach your destination.

This ancient pink-tinged city was built in the 6th century BC, carved into a remote stone canyon in Jordan’s southern desert. If that’s not a dramatic enough backdrop for your proposal, Jordan’s also home to numerous Roman ruins in Amman and Jerash. Destination engagement proposals

Follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia riding camels through the Wadi Rum, stopping in a lush oasis to pop the question.

New Zealand

Another top destination for proposals is New Zealand, with its epic mountainous landscapes, tranquil lakes, and secluded beaches. What better spot for adrenaline seekers than the country where bungee jumping was invented? Where should I propose overseas?

Go jet-boating near the vibrant Huka Falls, or try tandem sky diving to get your pulse racing. One of the most unique experiences in New Zealand that combines both adventure and romance is a rafting expedition to Waitomo’s limestone caves. Getting engaged overseas

Sri Lanka

With eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, Sri Lanka is a destination that’s a bit off the beaten path yet provides no shortage of culture and adventure.

Go whale watching, stay in a tea plantation, track leopards in the jungle, or view the unparalleled sight of the annual elephant migration, which takes place in Sri Lanka’s Minneriya National Park. Or consider taking a road trip.

  1. Love reading Megan blogs. How about exciting travelling for the over 50’s… must admit me and my hubby have done a bit!! Lol. Xxx

    • Thankyou Janet! I don’t believe in age holding you back – all of these suggestions would definitely apply as exciting travel for the over 50’s! Truly believe that it’s not growing old we have to worry about, it’s thinking old ;)

      Happy travels!

  2. I couldn’t agree more about Petra in Jordan. I just returned from the Middle East and I was extremly lucky to be able to attend Petra by night and explore almost the full stone city of Petra the next day. Encountering the Treasury by night and very early in the morning as one of the very few first visitors is truly magical.

Another sight which is absolutely awe-inspiring IMO are the various sections of the Great Wall of China. I heard from a guy who proposed to his girlfriend at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall (I met both short afterwards). These two would be my favourite places for a proposal (of a guy to me, of course).

    • So glad you had the opportunity to experience Petra in both the night and day Vanessa – really is a trip of a lifetime!!

Great tip on the Great Wall – I haven’t been there myself, though I’ve seen stunning photos, and I imagine it would be just magical!!

  3. Afraid I’m already married, but I can attest that the Waitomo caves are beautiful!
Petra is near the top of my bucket list – do not like the Indiana Jones movies all that much, but the idea of a city built into stone is fascinating.

    • Could easily turn this into a list for ideas of a second honeymoon though :D I think Petra definitely has a universal appeal even if you’re not into Indiana Jones … something about it which just has adventure written all over it!! Such a fascinating and stunning place!

  4. Any of these sound wonderful to me – they would really put that proposal in a different class and create lovely memories. But I also think it might be stressful organising all that on top of the actual holiday….

    • Luckily though as the woman we don’t need to worry about any of the additional stress lol :D

  5. My biggest fear about a proposal while on a trip would be the safety of the ring!! I wouldn’t want to put it in my checked baggage if that got lost, but don’t think I’d want to carry it on me out of fear of my partner somehow finding it. However, if it could be pulled off, any of these locations would be AMAZING to be proposed to at!

    • I do agree with you on that! I remember hearing about Prince William’s proposal to Kate Middleton and how he was so worried he would lose his mother’s ring as they made their way through Kenya. I don’t envy the guys having to deal with that kind of stress!

But yes, totally agree, if you can pull it off, going to be a very hard proposal to say no to. I think these kind of destinations basically guarantee you a yes :D

  6. These would all make great honeymoon destinations for adventurous couples as well :)

    • Absolutely – you could revisit the proposal destination for your honeymoon, or head out to one of the other destinations to change the scenery entirely :)

  7. I certainly wouldn’t mind being proposed in New Zealand :) though if course it’s not the site of the proposal that’s the most important, but the feelings of the two people involved. That said, some of these sites sound like great places for anniversary travel as well, especially big anniversaries. Something to think about … :)

    • Definitely the feelings of the two people involved which matter more than the destination. The destination just makes it memorable and special :)

These sites would absolutely be fantastic anniversary destinations too – or even if you’ve got some making up to do after an argument or two :D

  8. Interesting proposals – alway, I guess, not just for engagement or getting married.
New Zealand appeals to me the most – I guess it’s because I heard so much about its beauty and peaceful nature.

    • I hope you can get to New Zealand soon :) If you’re traveling for beauty of nature and a peaceful destination this is definitely the place for you!

And totally agree, all destinations here are fabulous for any kind of adventurous trip.

  9. Hmm… for some reason Puerto Rico comes to mind. Don’t ask why. ;)

    • Haven’t personally been there before but will have to add it to my list!

  10. Chile has such a romance in the air along with great food mmm and a bit of everything! At one point, I felt like I was in Europe in downtown Santiago, then it was like the French Riviera at Vina del Mar. I passed my engagement but Chile really has it all and so many spots for those who are adventurous.

    • Great point! We’ve only really had the chance to visit Easter Island in Chile, so would love to get to the mainland to explore more. Loved our time there.

Even though you’ve passed your engagement, sounds like a great place for an anniversary celebration!
