There are several reasons travelers gamble overseas.

One of the primary reasons is the allure of experiencing a new culture and its unique gambling scene. Many countries have their own distinct style of gambling, whether it be playing baccarat in Macau or trying your luck at pachinko in Japan.

And then there’s the luxury and extravagence of overseas gambling destinations, from the opulent casinos of Monaco to the lavish resorts of Las Vegas.

Though often, it can be far more affordable to gamble overseas than in your home country, which may have high taxes and strict regulations.

One thing most travelers run into around the world are casino bonuses, and while every country will have their own specific flair, the following are the most common you’re likely to run into, and how they work, if you’re throwing the dice, or being dealt in overseas.

Casino Tourism: Types of Casino Bonuses You’ll Experience Overseas

Why Casinos Offer a Bonus

There are several types of casino bonuses. A casino bonus has either of these two goals: for the casino to attract new players or for the online casino to retain an old player.

1. Casinos may also offer bonuses to promote specific games or products. For example, a casino may offer a bonus for players who try out a new slot machine or table game.

2. To compete with other casinos: Bonuses are a way for casinos to stand out from the competition. With so many available, especially in hot destinations like Vegas and Macau, offering a generous bonus can be a way to attract customers who might otherwise go to another casino.

3. To increase revenue: While bonuses do cost the casino money, they can also encourage players to make larger deposits and play more frequently, which can ultimately lead to more revenue for the casino.

Once the wagering requirements have been met, you can request a withdrawal of your winnings.

  1. Collect Your Chips: If you are playing table games, you will need to collect your chips from the table before cashing out. If you are playing slot machines, you can skip this step.
  2. Head to the Cashier: Once you have collected your chips (if applicable), you will need to head to the cashier’s desk. This is typically located near the entrance or in a central location in the casino.

  3. Present Identification: When you get to the cashier’s desk, you will need to present a valid photo ID. This is required to ensure that the person cashing out is the same person who won the money. Part of the process may include proofing of your funds.

  4. Cash Out: After presenting your ID, you can request to cash out your chips or ticket. The cashier will verify the amount and provide you with cash or a check.
  5. Taxes: If you win a large amount of money, the casino may be required to withhold taxes depending on which country you’re in.

  6. Leave the Casino: Once you have cashed out, you can leave the casino with your winnings.

  1. Each looks to be a fun way to make some dough. Casinos seem to be popping up all over the world these days. Every time I travel I appear to see more gambling along the way, especially as I wade through Southeast Asia.

    • It’s definitely the biggest travel trend kicking off in even countries where it used to be officially banned
