Scotland is one of those rare countries in the world with landscapes so diverse you could travel for months and still not have seen it all!

From the highlands in the north with dramatic moors, rolling hills, rugged coasts and dazzling lochs, to the Scottish borders which boast medieval castles and manor houses, there is no doubt that Scotland is one of the world’s most beautiful and historically fascinating countries.

But you haven’t visited Scotland if you haven’t journeyed through the Highlands, and there are some definite perks to setting yourself up in a Scottish Highlands Hotel (a personal favorite is the Luxury Cairngorms Hotel).

The majority of stock photos from Scotland come from this area – clans, tartan kilts, whisky, bagpipes, and the whole area has rightfully been described as an “adventure playground” for hikers, mountain bikers and sailors, however the romantic and remote scenery is enough to captivate those who are maybe less energetic!

3 Reasons to Drop Everything and Book a Stay in a Scottish Highlands Hotel

A Serene Environment

One of the best things about choosing a hotel in the Scottish Highlands is that you get to relax amid ancient landscapes, and a serene environment. It’s the perfect chance to get away from the hustle and bustle / noise of the city.

We know it’s a cliché, but the Highlands really is the Scotland of your imagination, with unparalleled scenery. Think big skies, and mind-blowing landscapes.

‘You can get lost (not literally) in the majestic mountains and mysterious lochs, wake up to witness dolphins frolicking off the Moray Coast, walk in the shadow of Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, or explore the stunning islands and stretches of coastline.’

Staying in a hotel in the Scottish Highlands offers access to the UK’s biggest outdoor playground. The hotels which are built into the landscape here offer the best views of the Highlands, and you’ll experience a sense of calm, peace and tranquility which cannot be found anywhere else.

If there’s anywhere that lends itself to a few nights in a medieval castle, it’s the Scottish Highlands.

Professional Services

The landscape of the Highlands might be ancient, but the service is anything but. You’ll find that Scottish hospitality leaves a lasting impression, beyond anything you’ve experienced at other hotels.

The hotels you’ll find in the Scottish Highlands are some of Scotland’s highest rated luxury hotels. And the main reason for their perfect hotel reviews is Scottish hospitality, and a very good understanding of their customer’s needs.

A UK study found that of all UK destinations, Scottish hotel owners are the most welcoming to guests, constantly going above and beyond to make travellers feel at home. Despite hosting the highest number of tourist visits in the UK, London failed to make it to the top 5.

The services which are offered at most Highland hotels are tailored to individual preference, and guests are offered a highly personalized level of service. Hotel staff are always professional and friendly and strive to exceed expectations.

Best Value for Money

Value for money is about feeling that you got more than you paid for, and hotels located in Scottish Highlands understand the need to provide high quality and exceed expectations.

The amenities on offer are always top notch, and it’s common for Highland hotels to offer free extras such as Wi-Fi, parking, breakfast and a wide range of other services.

Rooms are typically very spacious, with large, comfortable beds. And then there are your hotels which go a notch higher and include a Jacuzzi and a spa which further enhance the hotel experience.

  1. Scotland dazzles me from afar Meg! Definitely one of the prettiest lands on earth. But like here in NZ, it is the range of landscapes that make it a cut above most spots.

Seeing a stunning tropical paradise floors me, but being in a country where the landscape and climate changes so quickly really blows my mind. Especially in such a small nation. Gives you great range, and so many brilliant experiences to enjoy in limited time. Win-win.

    Super post and great snaps!

    • Scotland is very similar to NZ in the sense of remote and wild landscapes. So if you’ve loved your time in NZ, the Scottish Highlands would make for a great next trip!

So glad you enjoyed the post Ryan. Thanks as always for your comment :)

  2. If you can’t get there watch Outlander. ?

    • I am desperately awaiting the next season :D

  3. We live here :) love Scotland.

    • What an awesome country to call home Tasha! Must be incredible to have places like the Highlands within easy reach of a weekend trip :)

  4. My dream destination. One day!

    • I promise it will live up to every expectation! :)

  5. Do they wear the traditional tartans? Like, the staff?

    • Maybe for special occasions if there’s an event at the hotel, like a wedding, but otherwise no, normal Western clothes :)

  6. We did a backpacking tour through the Highlands when I was in my early 20’s – didn’t have a lot of money at the time so it was camping. Not that I’m complaining – such an incredible country to camp through. Would be incredible to head back though now with the budget to stay in nice hotels.

    • The Highlands truly would be an incredible place to throw down a tent. Great way to connect with nature :) It would be nice though to have both experiences, the hotels are truly memorable too :)

  7. I want to stay in a castle here. There’s a haunting air of mystery that cloaks the Highlands – I think a castle stay would be such a wicked way to travel.

    • A castle stay would be an incredible experience for sure!

  8. I’m really looking forward to visiting in summer one year for the Highland Games. Have to practice my hammer throwing in the meantime!

    • That would be incredible Von! I actually don’t have the highland games on my bucket-list – adding it now!

  9. When it comes to romantic settings, the five-suite Pool House on Loch Ewe is one of your best options in the Highlands. The interiors are stylish and strewn with antiques, but it’s far from stuffy—owned and managed by the Harrison family, it’s all about luxurious comfort.

    • Thanks for the tip Kristopher, I guess I have an excuse to plan a return trip :D

  10. The Scottish Highlands have been on my bucket list for years.

    • A worthy bucket-list destination for sure. Hope you have the chance to travel soon :)

  11. Check out Haunted Drover’s Inn – it’s 300 years old and haunted. Great Scottish food and whisky. It’s quirky! You won’t soon forget it.

    • Sounds spooky! Thanks for the tip Dyan :)

  12. I know that this article is about hotels … BUT you should do a train journey with the Royal Scotsman (belmond.com) Luxury accommodation aboard the train beyond what you would get at any hotel, and you get to actually move through the majestic scenery. It’s definitely one of those pinch me moments – there’s even a spa on board, it’s a palace on wheels!

    • That does sound incredible Lacey! Will have to add it to my bucket-list :)

  13. Thanks for writing about this holiday accommodation…would love to try staying in such offbeat locations in the future!

    • You’re welcome David, I’m glad you enjoyed the post! Happy travels :)
