Easter Island was a huge bucket list item for us. Traveling to one of the earth’s most remote islands and witnessing firsthand the famous monumental statues (called moai), created by the early Rapa Nui people.

And while there are many posts to come documenting our amazing week spent on the island, here are some “postcards” from our collection of photos in the meantime.

  1. Wonderful images, Megan.

    • Thanks Charles! We loved Easter Island :)

  2. Absolutely fab shots Megan. Easter Island looks so pristine. Thanks!

    • Thanks Ryan! We really had a wonderful time in Easter Island – it really is one of the most pristine destinations we have been lucky enough to visit :)

  3. Wow, those are incredible shots! Fact: I didn’t know that the heads are called moai. Thanks for teaching me something new :)

    • Thanks Sara! We learn something new every day! There was a lot I actually learned about the island while we were there which I didn’t previously know. There is such a fascinating history attached to the island; lots of blog posts to come!

  4. These are gorgeous pictures!! I didn’t get to go out to Eastern Island when I was in Chile earlier this year, and I’m so sad about it! Next time I’m down there, I’m definitely going to go!

    • Thanks Anna! Definitely book a trip next time you’re in the area – Easter Island has been such a highlight of our travels to date! Safe travels!

  5. Those are great photos Megan! Easter Island is such an eerie place. I have spent four days there and after two I felt already that I had seen everything that there was to see on the island. It was a strange, but yet a really interesting visit… :)

    • Thanks Dennis! It’s definitely a small Island. We absolutely loved it, though 5 days there was definitely enough to see everything. We managed to circle the whole island in a day on our Quad bike rental.

As there was no internet connection we spent a lot of our down time watching historical documentaries which our B&B had for guests. Was really interesting knowing the history behind the place. Pretty fascinating stuff!

  6. Great photographs! It is at the top of my bucket list too! It looks amazing.

    • Thanks Michelle! I can’t recommend Easter Island enough. It was fantastic! I hope you get the opportunity to travel there soon!

  7. We were there last year – AMAZING experience. When we were looking across at Ahu Tongariki there was a huge totally formed rainbow that finished right into them.

    • Wow how fantastic!! I imagine that would have been insanely spectacular! Sadly no rainbows while we were there, though the sunsets each night were so amazing. Incredibly memorable trip :)

  8. Wow those pictures are amazing. Easter Island is definitely on my bucket list especially after seeing those sunset photos!

    • You would love Easter Island Sophie – definitely one of those destinations which lives up to the hype!

  9. Fabulous photo’s Megan – Enjoyed learning about the beautiful views on Easter Island! Travel on!

    • Thankyou Deb! I hope you can manage a trip here soon to witness these views too :)

  10. These look great! I would love to go! Any idea if it is possible to visit as a budget traveller?

    • Hi Oliver :) Because it’s such a remote island, Easter Island does tend to be more on the expensive side. But there are definitely ways to cut down on the costs.

Re accommodation there are a couple of couch surfing hosts on the island (though check this in advance because they tend to book out), as well as a couple of campgrounds which offer hostel-style accommodation for pretty cheap. Once again though book this in advance because it’s not one of those destinations where you can just rock up and there’ll be space.

Hostels you can sometimes get for around $25+ per night, and some that we saw were Vaianny Guest House, Hostel Petero Atamu, Kona Tau, and Casa de Fatima Hotu.

Meals can be expensive, but you can bring food with you from mainland Chile if you’re looking to cut down on costs, or hit up the grocery store instead of eating out.

Don’t do tours because they’re expensive – we rented push bikes and explored by ourselves … we also rented a quad bike which was more expensive but way better for circling the whole island which is hilly in parts. Push bikes from town to the National Park almost killed us lol!!

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

  11. 09 April 2018 : Hi Megan & Mike, came across your amazingly good site whilst trying to find some used postcards of Easter Island statues / Moai. I’m a semi-retired photographer (ex-Toyota South Pacific.) Over the years have travelled to 63 countries but unfortunately never got to Easter Island. You really do have some excellent shots. Be great to hear from you. Kind regards Gerry. Brisbane.

    • Hi Gerry, thanks for reaching out, glad you enjoyed our photos! Unfortunately we don’t have any actual postcards from Easter Island on hand anymore. I would be happy to send you one of our photos as a postcard if you would like though, I use an app called MyPostcard nowadays which lets me send my photos as real postcards, and manage it all online. If you would like one shoot me an email to meganjerrard@gmail.com with your mailing address :)

  12. Easter Island is definetly one of the most beautiful places on the world. Is amazing how a culture got to develop here, thousands of miles away from the continents and other civilizations.
    Amazing pictures! Really love them!

    • Absolutely, I’m so fascinated by the culture and history on this small, isolated island too – so much to dive into!

So glad you enjoyed our photos Ale :) Thanks for stopping by!
