Where to Enjoy Peruvian Folkloric Music and Andean Dance

Update: Since our visit in 2014, Junius Restaurant is now Closed. We are working to research alternative options for this experience.

Lima is the culinary capital of the world, and there’s no better way to enjoy mouthwatering local Peruvian cuisine than taking in dinner with a show!

The Junius Restaurant at the El Pardo Doubletree by Hilton Hotel combines delicious cuisine with a spectacular, colorful, and live folklore show. The show features typical dance from every region in Peru, including the most impressive dances of the Peruvian Andes.

A fully interactive show which is lively, playful and upbeat, the most entertaining spectacle was Danza De Las Tijeras.

Recognized by UNESCO as intangible Cultural Heritage of Peru, it is a dance which is accompanied by a harp and violin whose dancers dance with two loose pieces of scissors in hand, making acrobatic movements whilst competing with each other.

It was a phenomenal way to spend our first evening in Peru!

We are currently traveling on behalf of Doubletree by Hilton DTour; a whole new way to plan – and share – your travels. We are staying at El Pardo Doubletree by Hilton, Lima, Peru.

  1. Oops, messed up my comment above. I meant to say that I love hearing traditional, native or folk music of the places where I visit. It helps get a real sense of the cultural background there. Thanks for sharing this one, Megan!

    • Thanks JR lol no worries! Making an effort to hear the native music of different regions really gives you more of a full idea of the place. It’s funny how powerful music can be! Really glad you enjoyed it!

  2. Experiencing traditional music and dance is a great way to get to know a place! I love seeking out small venues like this when I travel. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Looks like the perfect start to your visit to Peru. I love dinner shows like this, although some can be a little on the touristy side, this one looks pretty authentic.

    • I’ll admit we’re always a little skeptical when we hear about dinner shows, or cultural dance shows just because they generally prove to be fairly touristy and commercial just for show. But we were really impressed with this show – was really authentic and while it was entertaining it seemed to stay pretty true to the Peruvian culture without adding bells and whistles for tourism :)

  4. Thank you for finding out about this place! It seems amazing. I hope to go to Peru soon and am really looking for some good places to hear all the different sounds of Peruvian music. If you have any other recommendations,I would love to hear them.

    • You won’t be disappointed with Junius then – combines everything into one show! We only spent two days in Lima, so Junius was the only show we managed to take it, but it was pretty great so would highly recommend it.

If you’re heading to Peru for the first time I would obviously also recommend a trip up to Machu Picchu – it was by far one of the highlights of our trip!

  5. That looked like an incredible atmosphere and environment! Best wishes on your continuing travels!

    • Thanks Dylan! It really was a fantastic experience – highly recommend if you’re in the Lima area!

  6. The scissors dance is an ancient cultural heritage. Before the arrival of the Spanish the Incas used this as a ritual for the gods.

    • Thanks for the added insight :) Really was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves more deeply in the cultural heritage of Peru!

  10. Hi Meg Jerrard,

Thanks for sharing informative content regarding music. I appreciate your efforts.
I want to add some other type of music, like violin.
Lindsey and Asherlaub are my favorite personalities. I listened both them. I added his blog in website portion. I think we can also take that music for enjoyment. What you say?

    • Hi Sam, thanks for sharing your favorite music. I haven’t heard of Lindsey and Asherlaub so will have to check out some of their music on Google :)
