La Perouse Bay

La Perouse Bay

Not your typical tourist attraction, La Perouse Bay in the Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve on Maui is my favourite place in Hawaii.  With stunning black sand beaches, crystal water lapping against a rustic coastline and remnants of lava from the last volcanic eruption in Maui, La Perouse Bay is an experience which is truly out of this world!

Driving will only get you so far – the road ends at beautiful lava flats and the bay is then only accessible via a walking trail.  While hiking across uneven volcano rock may not sound appealing, the walk is not difficult, and the view is spectacular!  Pack proper walking shoes as sandals are probably not appropriate!

  1. This looks like a beautiful spot! we always end up in Oahu but more and more i am finding reasons to visit Maui! how far would you say the trail is? walkable with a 3 and 5 year old??

    • Hi Lindsay! Really is a beautiful spot, and I highly recommend it. The walk isn’t difficult, and would be totally doable with kids. It’s bumpy because it’s over lava rocks, so do make sure everyone has proper walking shoes :) Have a great trip! Maui is incredible :)

  2. OK, gonna look into this as I will be on the island of Maui this summer. I rather take tips or advice from other bloggers than from tourist companies who only want to take ya to the touristy places. he he.

    • We loved our time in Maui, I hope you have a great trip! And it’s a very easy island to explore independently, you definitely don’t need tour companies. Feel free to hit us up via email if you have any questions :)
