Not your typical tourist attraction, La Perouse Bay in the Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve on Maui is my favourite place in Hawaii.

With stunning black sand beaches, crystal water lapping against a rustic coastline and remnants of lava from the last volcanic eruption in Maui, La Perouse Bay is an experience which is truly out of this world!

Driving will only get you so far – the road ends at beautiful lava flats and the bay is then only accessible via a walking trail.  While hiking across uneven volcano rock may not sound appealing, the walk is not difficult, and the view is spectacular!  Pack proper walking shoes as sandals are probably not appropriate!

  1. Looks beautiful! Very cool to see different shades of the rock! Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks MarY! Probably one of the most beautiful spots across all of Hawaii! I truly love Maui!

  2. La Perouse Bay looks really amazing Megan! Unfortunately I missed visiting Maui when I was in Hawaii, but it looks like it’s definitely worth going back for. By the way, the sand doesn’t even seem that black on the photo… ;)

    • You definitely need to get back to Hawaii to experience Maui! Such an amazing spot on the map! Lol and you’re right, this sand is not black – there’s a black sand beach on the other side of the preserve, though I liked this photo of where the lava flats meet the bay.

  3. Although the walk might be a little treacherous, the reward is definitely worth the effort.

    • Yes it is! Sounds like you’re also a Maui fan! It’s such a fab location!

  4. Yes please! Gorgeous shot.

    • Thanks Sarah! So glad you love the photos – it’s a magical place!
