“My name is Thor”, he said. “Are you ready for some action?!”

We nodded enthusiastically, and grabbed jumpsuits and helmets before jumping onto monster ATV’s. We were about to experience the Icelandic Outback.

Quad biking with Safari Quads is the ultimate Icelandic adventure. Riding well off the beaten path, often through lakes, rivers and ravines, we powered our way uphill through extraordinary scenery before reaching the peaks of Hafrafell & Úlfarsfell where we were greeted with spectacular panoramic views over Reykjavik.

What a view! Panorama over the back country of Reykjavik.

Booked onto the Twin Peaks tour, this was not your average quad ride. The safari quads were huge, and, in this instance, size definitely made for a more memorable experience!

Incredibly large and powerful vehicles, fully equipped with 4WD to tackle more difficult terrain, we had an absolute blast zipping through back roads and mountain trails as we made our way through the mountain ranges.

We tackled every type of terrain possible, literally off-roading through river crossings and rocky roads, through mud and grass routes, and climbing steep hills on the side of intimidating mountain tops. We watched the countryside change into wilderness as we took in the beautiful back-country of Reykjavík.

Quad biking in Iceland was an exhilarating experience and a great way to experience the great outdoors. We can’t wait to revisit in winter and take the tour again, this time at night, with the hopes of watching the northern lights dance over our heads.

  1. “My name is Thor”? I would kill for having an awesome guide named as that!!!

Riding a quad bike in a exotic location has been one of my dreams, I hope to do it this year or the next one! :D

    • His name genuinely was Thor!! Awesome right!!

  2. We’ve been a few places that offer ATV tours and still haven’t done one yet. Looks like a lot of fun. Going at night would be spectacular.

    • It was really great fun – we’ve now done it in 3 different locations around the place and will keep going back for more!! Highly recommend – it’s a great way to sightsee while having a blast!

  3. This looks like so much fun! I’ve never done an ATV tour before. This looks like the perfect place to go on one – such gorgeous scenery!

    • It was a great way to take in the countryside and amazing scenery while having an absolute blast at the same time! Highly recommend ATV tours – they’re so much fun!!

  4. Yeah, the Icelanders know perfectly well what a great adventure is. I’ve not gone quadbiking there myself yet but been on a ton of other adventures. Martijn is there now, guiding a tour, and I’m just a wee bit jealous I can’t go to Iceland again, it’s a country I just love coming back to over and over.

    • There were so many options for adventures in Iceland – so cool that Martijin is tour guiding there!! I’ve just returned and I’m a little jealous myself lol would love to go back!! Definitely agree – you can go over and over again without it getting old!

  5. What a really cool adventure you experienced on quad bikes! I can just imagine hopping on one of those and just exploring the Icelandic wilderness, no better place on earth to be out roaming around (of course with a guide that is!).

I am wondering if we can do this in December but it may depend on if the weather is on our side! Fingers crossed because this looks awesome.

    • Shoot safari quads an email to find out – December might be covered in a fair bit of snow, however I have a friend who took the Quads out a few months ago in March and the ice didn’t seem to be a problem :)

  6. This is so right up my alley! Looks like an incredibly fun adventure! Nice video, too :)

    • Thanks Alli! I love making videos from our trips and carry our GoPro with us everywhere now!!

  7. oooh, this sounds awesome!!
Must have been loads of fun.
Iceland has always been one of the countries on the top of my bucket list, and, when I’ll finally find to achieve my dream to visit it, I’d definitely want to try this way to explore it. Sounds much more envolving than wandering with a 4×4 – you can see everything around in a much direct way.
BUT if I’ll try it I’d only want to do it with Thor as a guide too!! :D

    • It was pretty cool having a guide names Thor!! Made the trip :D! I hope you have the opportunity soon to hit up Iceland – I haven’t met a single person who has been disappointed…we definitely weren’t!!

  8. Hi Megan !

  10. Hi Megan,

Great detailing. I was reading about your journey in a different thread and quite overwhelmed by the fact that you are living a life of true nomad. It’s must be exciting to explore so many parts of our beautiful earth. Though this post is little old, still found your Iceland visit quite exciting. Thank you for sharing.

    Regards

    • Hi Sam, thanks for connecting :) We’ve since settled down into a permanent base, but spent many years traveling full time as digital nomads – it’s definitely an exciting lifestyle!

So glad you enjoyed reading about our Iceland journey – it’s my favorite country in the world – can’t wait to get back!

      Happy travels!
