As part of this year’s celebrations of German reunification, we previously introduced you to Hamburg. But there is another city you shouldn’t miss when travelling to Germany, especially not in the pre-Christmas season: Dresden.

Dresden is the capital of Saxony and a masterpiece of its own. Its biggest attraction, the Church of our Lady, was destroyed during World War 2, and as part of former Eastern Germany, it wasn’t openly accessible to tourists for many years.

A few years after German reunification, the baroque church was finally reopened and restored in 1994. Now it’s shining more than ever, and talking to you in this inspirational video about Dresden:

Dresden is sometimes referred to as the Florence of Germany, and rightly so!

There are many things to do in Dresden; between the stunning Church of our Lady and the sheer beauty of the city center, it is also packed with museums of art and history that can fill a culture lover’s schedule for days.

If you visit Dresden in the pre-Christmas season make sure to visit the Striezelmarkt, which is Germany’s oldest Christmas market!

  1. I’ve been few times to Dresden but it was all many years ago. I was planning a trip there this past August but on the day I was about to leave I got pretty sick and had to cancel everything :/ Too bad as I was really hoping to revisit this amazing city and see how it has changed! Hopefully I will get there next year, Dresden really is such an underrated destination in Germany!

    • I so hope you can get back next year Kami – it truly is a remarkable city. Sorry you had to cancel your last trip.

Happy holidays, and hopefully you can get a Dresden trip up and running in 2015!

    • Sounds like the perfect excuse to head back! Christmas markets in Germany are some of the best too, so it’d definitely be a treat to get back around December.

I hope you can make it happen for 2015!
