You’ve decided that the two of you need some time away. You may have already renewed your vows and committed to each other. You’ve even gone so far as to go to ItsHot.com and found the perfect renewal bands.

Now, you want to make a romantic getaway on a budget that is unforgettable. Here are five ways to make that happen.

5 Ways to Make Your Romantic Getaway Unforgettable and Affordable

Make it Meaningful

A romantic getaway should be meaningful for both of you. That means, if you want to go to the Andes and learn about the Atacama peoples, but she doesn’t, don’t make that your romantic getaway.

Find something that will be meaningful to you both. One of the reasons you are together is that you share similar interests on some level. Find those similarities and look for a meaningful experience that will match those.

Meaningful experiences can be had in your own area or state. So, you don’t have to make a huge expense to go somewhere exotic. You can create that memorable romantic getaway and save your wallet.

Research Online

Search engines today are a powerful resource to find getaways. In the past, you would have to call a travel agent or go to your local library to find information about destinations. Now, you can just open up a search engine, type in your keywords and hit the search button.

You can research romantic getaways in your hometown or find a place that’s thousands of miles away. Doing your research also helps you find the best price for your budget, too. These are very important if you are on a budget.

The internet can help you narrow down your options based on your budget, where you want to go, and what you want to do. You can even research special events in the area you’ll be visiting to take part in those experiences with your loved one.

Start Saving Now

If you’re planning your getaway for next year, start saving now. If you’re planning your getaway for this summer, definitely start saving now! B

y putting away a little bit of money on a regular basis, you’ll be able to afford a truly romantic getaway without having to worry about costs. You want your experience to be memorable with happy, romantic memories, not stressful worries about how you’re going to pay for everything.

Using your credit card to purchase tickets and then paying off the credit cards will also help build your credit.

Bring it With You

You should always have the right travel gear and equipment when you head out on an adventure, and most of the things you’ll need you can bring with you.

If you’re planning a glamping trip along the Appalachian Trail, you will need to do your research to see what the sites furnish and what you’ll want to bring. And of course don’t forget to create a special playlist so there’s a soundtrack to your adventure!

Songs are known for bringing memories including smells and feelings back as clearly as the day you experienced them. So you can use that to your advantage. When you hear a song from that playlist years later, it might take you back to the exact moment in time.

Bringing your own candles, food, or even bedding can help save your budget and create a homey feel wherever you are. Or you can download the first movie you went to with your loved one. With smart technology today, you’ll be able to watch it and recreate that tingly feeling when they first touched your hand.

Splurge on Experiences Not Stuff

When you’re researching, remember that the experience is more than what was bought. So splurge on special experiences during your romantic getaway instead of focusing on buying them things.

Small tokens are special, but don’t go all out on those things. Go all out on making this getaway something you’ll both remember for the rest of your lives. You’ll be excited to do another one, too. To make it a tradition each year or special holiday for you both.

It’s about the experience, not the cost, so a low cost experience is just as memorable for you both if you loved it. How much you spent isn’t what makes the getaway romantic, it’s what you did and how you felt that’s important.

  1. I love that you mention to make a romantic getaway meaningful for both people. It’s about sharing the experience together and if it’s only one of you that’s catered for, it may end up being memorable for the wrong reasons. I’m definitely going to share this with my partner.

    • Absolutely Julie – everything in a relationship is about finding common ground, and it’s not very romantic if the enjoyment is one sided!

So glad you enjoyed the post :)

  2. People assume that romance is all about fluff or grandeur, but sometimes the simplest of things can be the most romantic…like spending a couple of hours watching a sunset or even watching a musical concert. I feel, romance is about shared experiences, even a walk through a expansive garden works :)

    • Totally agree with you – I would much rather a simple, intimate experience than a large over the top fuss. It’s all about shared experiences and meaningful moments :)

We’re in Melbourne at the moment and our whole day tomorrow is going to be just walking through the Botanic Gardens – can’t beat a walk in the park!

  3. I do agree that finding the perfect trip that both parties in a couple will like is the way to go to enjoy some quality time together. Online research is definitely the key factor to define where you want to go: finding events in the area are a nice bonus!

    • Absolutely Danila – kind of awkward if it’s supposed to be romantic but only one of you are enjoying the trip! We’re so lucky these days with access to information online – no excuse for not being able to plan the perfect trip!

  4. I think following your tips for planning a romantic getaway will save one from a lot of trouble. I like the tips ‘splirge on experiences not stuff’s the most. Isn’t that what matters most? But many of us keep forgetting that. Thanks for these tips Meghan, hopefully, we get to see some destinations you’d recommend for getaways. I’m curious.

    • Experiences definitely matter most – I figure at the end of the day, I’ll remember the moments, not the things I had / wore. But it’s definitely easy to fall into the trap of materialism – we live in a very consumer driven world, so I figure it never hurts to have a reminder every now and then :)

So many amazing places you could head for a romantic getaway! If you jump up to the end of the post, above my authors bio is a box with related articles; check out those posts :) Hope you enjoy them!

  5. You know, I agree with the last point the most. I could have put it any better for the experiences is what makes you richer. The investment into those can really give you memories for a lifetime rather than physical stuff which you can lose or break. Glad you put that out.

    • Glad to hear we’re on the same page! Yes, in the end it’s the experiences and moments you remember, not the stuff you had. And no-one can ever take a moment away from you, where-as things are fickle, and as you pointed out, can get lost or break.

  6. These are indeed some great measures to help enhance the experience of a romantic getaway. It really makes sense to go to a location which both are interested in as otherwise one may be left in the “lurch”! Also splurging on experiences definitely makes sense. After all, memories linger much longer than tangible stuff.

    • “Memories linger much longer than tangible stuff” – love that – couldn’t have phrased it better myself!

So glad you enjoyed the post :)

  7. You gave us some very good suggestions, and I will certainly take them into consideration in the future. I agree that the most important are the experiences and not necessarily the material things.

    • Glad you enjoyed the post Bella :) Happy travels!

  8. Romantic getaways can also be just one day. We’ve mastered this art for 10 years now! As you say, it should be all about the experience and not the cost or the duration. As parents of a 10-year old, we plan our romantic getaways around our son’s weekend activities. For now, it has to do.

    • Really good point Linda! That’s fantastic that you’re taking the opportunity to take romantic day trips by taking advantage of your son’s schedule. Absolutely, it’s all about the experiences, and it doesn’t have to be some big trip to the other side of the world to spend quality time together.

      More power to you!

  9. I totally agree with you to invest in experiences, not in stuff. And yes, a romantic getaway does not need to be at the other corner of the world, but (I would say) just far enough to break with the couple’s daily routines.

    • Absolutely – to quote from Sandy and Vyjay’s comment above, memories linger much longer than tangible stuff!

Good tip, using something that breaks from the daily routine as a standard to meet for a romantic break, Linda above commented that she and her husband plan romantic days, as opposed to breaks which I think is fabulous!

  10. I couldn’t agree more with ‘splurge on experiences, not stuff’.I am never the one for jewellery and expensive clothes, for me, it’s all about making sure that I get to experience the best of what there is in a city, take a road trip, go for a hike, zipline down a mountain, etc. Also, a vacation can only be romantic if both of you agree on the destination. It should be of both people’s choice, not one :) Nice tips here, Meg.

    • I’m so glad that I’m on the same page as everyone with the experiences over stuff – the memories we create last much, much longer. I’m the same as you – I still wear clothes I bought 4 years ago lol – I would much rather put the money into an experience, and live a life of adventure.

And yes, absolutely, I’ve seen so many couples book a couples retreat that only one of them is really interested in, and it never serves the purpose of bringing them closer. Should always be a mutual choice. Glad you enjoyed the post!
