If there’s one thing most of us expect nowadays it’s a reliable internet connection, and having access to mobile data is perhaps even more important for those who travel. That connection means access to information, money, and methods of communication when you find yourself in a foreign land. It’s how we organize everything from where to eat to finding a route to the hotel.

Mobile data has become such an integral part of our daily lives that most of us would be lost without it. Though international roaming can be expensive, so staying connected overseas usually means hitting up a local café, finding an insecure public hotspot, or buying a local sim.

Thankfully, companies like Flexiroam are starting to step in, offering a data roaming solution that lets you earn free data before you travel, helping to avoid huge roaming fees when you’re overseas.

Use Flexiroam X for Free Mobile Data When Traveling Overseas

You can hover over these (or any image) to quickly pin it!

Flexiroam X is the new way to data roam while you’re abroad.  It’s a new approach to travel sim cards where you can earn up to 100 GB of free data to use in over 100 countries around the globe.

Getting started is easy, and when you download the free mobile app (available on iOS and Android) you’re credited with 100 MB of data straight away.

Here’s How it Works

It’s Super Easy

Flexiroam X works off a one year subscription ($9.99 USD), which comes with a free starter pack made up of an X Microchip and SIM sticker. This micro-chip embedded film is thinner than a sheet of A4 paper, and easily sticks to your regular SIM card (this does not affect the performance of your regular SIM).

Once you attach the X Microchip to your regular SIM, you essentially have two SIM cards operating in your phone, and can access mobile data from over 100 countries in the world when you connect to the Flexiroam X SIM.

You can toggle back and forth between both SIM cards without having to physically remove the card from your phone. You’ll only have to apply the Microchip once, and you can keep it in your phone forever, whether you’re using the Flexiroam X SIM or not.

When you land in a different country, jump to your phone settings and switch to the Flexiroam X Microchip (their website has step-by-step tutorial videos).

Using their network via the app, you can then access data at uncapped, 4G speeds, without having to worry about a surprise phone bill or expensive international roaming fees.

Speed on the Flexiroam X networks is excellent. The company has teamed up with a number of international telecom providers for the fastest speeds.

How to Claim Your Free Data

Simple interactions through app earn you free data. For instance, referring a friend will earn you 100MB. You can start using the app a couple of weeks or even months before your trip overseas to start building a bank of data credits. Data lasts for a year so it can be used repeatedly during multiple trips.

If you’re pushed for time though you can purchase a data pack directly via the app – 1GB of data costs $29.99 USD and lasts for 12 months. When you renew the yearly membership, your data rolls over so you don’t lose anything you’ve purchased or accrued.

Things to Keep in Mind

Remember to turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi, as this takes precedence over mobile data. It took me a while to figure out that this was why Flexiroam wasn’t connecting!

Even though you have two SIM cards in your phone, you can only use one at a time. This means while you’re using Flexiroam X, you won’t be able to receive incoming calls or texts from your local SIM. It’s easy to quickly switch back and forth, but  keep in mind that switching to your local SIM card could incur expensive roaming charges.

The starter pack is free, though cost of shipping varies depending on your country. Shipping costs start from $5 USD.

Flexiroam randomly release free data codes on their social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter so be sure to keep an eye out for those codes.

Flexiroam X Review

In a Nutshell

Flexiroam X is a great way to roam internationally for as little cost as possible. It’s a LOT more convenient than having to physically switch between different SIMs, and because it’s a celluar service you don’t have to scramble to find free Wi-Fi overseas; you have data anywhere 4G coverage is present.

It’s the first service I’ve found to successfully eliminate the expensive costs of mobile data when traveling overseas, and represents incredible value for the data hungry traveler. It means we don’t have to compromise or downgrade our digital lifestyle just because we’re overseas.

Offering fast data speeds, generous rollover inclusions, plenty of countries covered, and speedy support, Flexiroam X is the latest travel hack available to travelers who are seeking a seamless and affordable way to stay connected online in over 100 countries across the globe.

  1. Neat advice, Meg! Thanks for sharing these useful tips. I’ll be sure to make good use of this the next time I travel! Cheers

    • Thanks Gagan! Flexiroam has been great for us, so I’m glad I could help spread the word! :)

  2. Free data, I’m in! So excited to learn about Flexiroam. Will definitely have to check them out. I use a TEP unit and a Google Fi data SIM. Love that this would mean I could leave both of those at home. Thanks for the heads up!

    • Definitely the easiest and most hassle free option to data overseas – I love that the microchip just sticks onto your sim and you can essentially set it and forget it. Everyone travels with their phone anyway, so it’s no extra space, and once it’s there, it’s there for all future trips :)

Definitely check it out Deb – let us know what you think!

  3. Pity this is not yet usable in India. The deal seems good especially for travel bloggers who are always on the move.

    • They do operate in India :) 4G isn’t available, but they work off the Aircel and Vodafone networks there. Definitely check it out!

  4. Great tip! This has been a problem. I didn’t know there was already a solution! We travel again in April so I have time to bank!

    • Thanks Carol … definitely look into Flexiroam for your upcoming April trip – lots of time to work up a bank of data between now and then! :)

  5. It is so important to have a good internet connection if you are a blogger/influencer or work from your laptop. This sounds like it is worth looking into that’s for sure!

    • Absolutely Melissa – for digital nomads, a guaranteed connection is imperative to keeping your business running, so Flexiroam is an asset to be traveling with :)

  6. I have to admit I’m a bit lost with SIM cards. I have a locked cell phone and I can’t switch out or stick anything on it because I can’t get to the SIM I have….or can I? I just don’t know. Admittedly, I need to figure this out so I will look more into Flexiroam because it looks like a solid solution to the data overseas problem.

    • Locked as in physically can’t get into the back of your phone, or locked as in locked to one provider? If it’s locked to one provider that’s fine, because Flexiroam acts as a separate SIM, so that won’t cause an issue.

If you can’t physically get into your phone to retrieve your SIM there’s likely something stuck with the phone, because every model I’ve come across allows you to access your SIM card. Maybe you could take it into a phone provider to have a look :) X

  7. Wow! Great that you were able to use it . It has lot of great features. Unfortunately when I tried, it did not work on my SIM. Even the help of Flexiroam people. I do have the sticker, which I hope to use it when I change my phone .

    • Sorry to hear that Nisha – hopefully it works for you once you change your phone :)

  8. I love the idea of this! I hate the scramble to find free wifi when we’re away and I just can’t afford ridiculous data roaming charges! It’s awesome that it works with your existing phone and sim without having switch or have a second handset. I’ll definitely look into this next time we’re heading overseas!

    • It really is the perfect solution, and the easiest, cheapest and most hassle free approach to data roaming I’ve come across to date :)

  9. Sounds too good to be true! I hate looking for wifi specially when you first get to a place. I love their one sim for everywhere feature! So useful.

    • Doesn’t it! The best part is it doesn’t disappoint!

  10. Thanks for the informative post. I think in this day an age after begging hotels for free wifi, the new wave of mobile wifi options are God sent. Not only that, but with people being on the road a lot and having a connection like this, it means being able to use stuff Google Maps etc at any time, especially when abroad. Thanks

    • You’re welcome Ticker :) Yes, I feel Flexiroam X is definitely the first in what’s sure to be a big wave of similar services in the very near future.

There’s a huge market for this kind of product / service, especially with the rise of the digital nomad, and location independent lifestyles meaning more people are traveling and working from their laptops abroad :)

  11. I’m always on the lookout for new data options and Flexiroam looks like it’s worth investigating. I’m a bit confused about the pricing though. $29.99 for 1GB seems a little high but it’s great to have that option available. How much would it cost for 10GB or 100GB?

    • Hi Christina! The $29.99 is an option extra you can purchase if you want immediate access to data and don’t have time to earn it for free. At the moment they’re only selling extra packs at 1GB, so if you’re after 10GB or 100GB you would aim to earn the data for free before you go on the trip :)

  12. Looks like a useful piece of tech. Can be useful for travelers who are always on the move.

    • Absolutely Gokul – we highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a mobile data solution while on the road :)

  13. This seems like a good option indeed. Being on the move and the pressure to keep up your commitment demands a reliable and fast network for Data, and this seems to hold out some hope in that direction.

    • Absolutely Vyjay – I was really impressed that Flexiroam X held it’s own and delivered on its promises of affordable, reliable mobile data :)

  14. This app sounds great and so convenient! I love that the data rolls over if you don’t use it all. This would’ve been great to use in Thailand, where I just had to keep searching for WiFi!

    • Highly recommend setting your phone up before your next trip – really is such a convenient way to stay connected overseas, and the rollover data is such a great feature … they’ve really put the emphasis on catering to the traveler :)

  15. Oh interesting, haven’t heard about this and free data is such a huge plus on saving money! Thanks for sharing this!

    • Glad we could introduce you to Flexiroam Mar – really is a fabulous way to save on data roaming abroad :)
