With Canada’s phenomenal wildlife and bubbling tourism industry, it’s no wonder that countless travelers and residents have chosen this country as their vacation or residential destination.

One of the largest industries, as well as one of the most popular, is the adventure travel and extreme sport industry. People from around the world flock to this country for the wild waters and beautiful scenery, and to enjoy the many exciting adventures it has to offer.

The jagged cliffs and roaring waters give this vast and diverse country its much-deserved reputation for being great for adventure seekers. For those who love being on the water, we’ve assembled a couple of ideas you won’t want to miss out on.

Adventure Travel Bucketlist: 3 Water Based Thrills for Adrenaline Junkies in Canada

Get Your Screams in on Nature’s Rollercoaster

White water rafting RF

The waves in Australia or Hawaii get major hype, but Canada’s Bay of Fundy holds the record for the highest tides in the world. And these rapidly rising tides make for some serious adrenaline opportunities.

With waves rising up to fifteen meters every day, the mouth of the Shubenacadie River experiences a rush of fast, cold water colliding with the outflow of the river itself.

Local adventurers have taken advantage of this natural phenomenon for river rafting trips. Rafting is great for thrill seekers that want to practice a low-skill, high-thrill based experience.

Depending on the moon phase and time of year, this river-rafting trip can be more of a relaxing jaunt down the river, or a full-fledged smack down.

It’s great for both families and individual travelers and is reasonably priced and relatively safe.

Kayaking on Canada’s Many Thrilling Rivers

Kayaking in fjords is a must, thing to do in Norway that you cannot skip!

This Country’s bloodthirsty white water doesn’t really make for a lazy river ride. Many visitors enjoy taking advantage of the beautifully varied South Nahanni River.

While a part of this water system is definitely something akin to a lazy river, though vastly more beautiful with broad valleys and gorgeous blue skies, most of it allows kayakers or canoers to truly go up against the wild, untamed waters of Nahanni National Park Reserve.

Skilled kayakers can try their luck against the sharp cliffs and jagged rocks and enjoy the views of the beautiful Mackenzie Mountains.

Other popular kayaking and canoeing destinations around the country include the Ottawa River in Ontario as well as the Bonaventure River in Quebec.

The Ottawa River is known for its vastness and its variety when it comes to rapids and water conditions. For this reason it can meet most all skill levels in order to provide a thrilling adventure for skilled kayakers and a less intense journey for those hoping to try it for the first time.

Explore Niagara Falls

You may get a little wet, but that’s part of the fun.

One of the most famous natural sightseeing destinations is Niagara Falls. Thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies can visit niagaratorontotours.com to sign up for an incredibly exciting helicopter tour of the gorgeous waterfall and terrifying water rapids.

Nothing is quite like the thrill of flying in a helicopter two-thousand-five-hundred feet above ground. This experience becomes even more thrilling when the view below is one of the most gorgeous, terrifying natural phenomena on the planet—Niagara Falls.

Beyond just the helicopter ride, which is a favorite among adventurous travelers, there are dozens of other tour options to help visitors experience the biggest thrills the Falls have to offer.

Other things to do in Niagara can include a wine tasting at the Niagara winery and several photo stops so that anyone, even the whole family, can enjoy a relaxing morning at this lovely waterfall.

It can also include admission to the Skylon Tower Outdoor Observation Deck, which allows individuals to observe the beautiful falls from high in the sky. This observation deck is both breathtaking and terrifying as it is almost surrounded by these powerful rapids.

  1. Niagara is best from the Canadian side.

    • Totally agree! :D

  2. I’ve always wanted to go white-water rafting, it looks like so much fun! Kind of scary though perhaps?

    • It’s such a thrilling experience! I didn’t personally find it scary but it’s definitely edgy – the nice thing is that the guides always put safety first, so you’re in good hands when you head out on a trip :)

  3. Didn’t someone go over Niagara Falls in a barrel at some point? Assuming that’s not a legitimate water sport though :D

    • Did they?!! I must have missed that lol I can’t imagine it would have been legal though! I’ll have to read up and see if I can find any info.

  4. You can do snorkeling with Seals in Nanaimo from Vancouver which is just the most amazing experience. The tour includes round trip airfare on a sea plane. Can’t go wrong there! The captain of my snorkel boat was amazing and gave me great pointers on the best way to get pictures of the seals underwater. It worked!

    • Thanks for the heads up, sounds awesome!

  5. It’s a dream to go kayaking in British Columbia one day. Or canoeing. I never know the difference between the two.

    • Neither do I tbh, I use them both pretty interchangeably :D Hope you have the chance to travel soon!

  6. We went rafting in Jasper a couple of years ago and it was totally awesome…an hour and a half of adventure, new friends and unbeatable natural beauty. The only sort of negative thing was the wet suit and life jacket were a bit stinky. They could probably spend a bit more energy on sanitizing the gear between each usage.

    • Sounds incredible Greg – isn’t rafting the best! Ah yes, I’ve found it’s pretty hit or miss with the wet suits you get … I actually took my own with my in Iceland which was a great idea, though not if you’re traveling the next day because they do need time to dry out.

Glad you had a fabulous time!

  7. Canada ❤ ❤ Great post!

    • Glad you enjoyed it Melanie :)

  8. Canada is such an adventurous country – just as many adventures in the water obviously as there are on land. We spent a lot of time hiking, and did the Rocky Mountaineer train journey which was incredible beyond words. As far as water activities went though we appreciated the views!

    • The Rocky Mountaineer is high on my bucketlist! Agree that Canada is such an adventure travelers playground :) Glad you had a fabulous trip!

  9. Definitely invest in water tight dry bags if you’re planning on going rafting, or even going on one of the Niagara boat tours – they give you ponchos but you still get drenched. You can get water tight cases for your cell phone that still allows you to take pictures and use the touch screen through the plastic. They’re great. A travel essential for sure.

    • Absolutely Joline, really great point – I can see cameras and phones getting ruined really easily!

  10. You missed surfing off this list ;) The coast of Nova Scotia has reliably great surf.

    • An obvious oversight! Thanks for the tip … I have to book in to learn one of these days :D

  11. From the much overhyped Bay of Fundy all the way to Vancouver, I have sampled the vistas and waterways of Canada. Trips worth making! [NOT the Bay of Fundy!]

    • So glad you had a fabulous time traveling through Canada Roy – I agree that the biggest gems are found in the less touristy places :)

  12. Fantastic ideas Megan and we just had friends do the Le Boat canal tour for a few days over the in Ontario and absolutely loved it. They got to bring kayaks along and they said it was a fantastic way to see the province by water.

    • Thanks guys! Glad to hear that your friends had a fabulous visit, kayaking has always been one of my favorite passtimes :)
