We are fortunate to live in an age where travel is cheaper and more accessible than ever before. There are fewer obstacles to experiencing far flung corners of the globe, and resources to find affordable (and even free) travel options exist these days in droves.

Though with practically endless opportunities to travel, one of the hardest parts of organizing the perfect holiday then becomes figuring out where to go.

It can be an overwhelming process wading through information to choose the perfect destination, though there are a couple of key criteria you can apply when planning to ensure you’ve made the right choice. Use the following points as bearings to guide your research when planning the perfect trip. This will ensure you choose a destination you can enjoy.

How to Choose the Perfect Destination For Your Next Trip

You can hover over this (or any image) to quickly pin it!

Consider the Time of Year

When to go is one of the biggest things to consider when choosing a destination for your next trip. Most destinations have very different seasons, and traveling during summer is likely to offer a completely different experience than winter would.

For instance, you might have time off in June, and book a trip to Iceland because you’ve always dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights.  You’re going to be quite disappointed when you realize they don’t come out in June. Or vice versa, if you’re traveling with the expectation of jumping in a car for a self drive through the country, though arrive in December when most of the roads are closed due to snow.

In considering the time of year, climate and weather is also something you should pay close attention to. For instance, if you’re not a fan of super humidity, you’re going to want to avoid Tokyo in summer (June to August). It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the time off to travel, if you’re hitting up a destination you’ve always dreamed of at the wrong time of year, it’s going to ruin the trip for you.

Consider Your Interests

It sounds like simple enough advice – choose a destination which fits with your hobbies and interests, and offers the things you like to do. However all too often we fall into the trap of listening to the recommendations of others, without considering that we have completely different interests, and would probably hate the trip that our best friend has just raved about having loved.

For instance, if you’re not a big fan of nightlife, and enjoy something more active than relaxing on the beach, heading to Ibiza probably isn’t for you. Sure, friends may have just returned and had the time of their lives, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the dream destination for you.

It’s ‘fear of missing out syndrome‘ – we hear about how amazing a destination is, so we jump to buy a plane ticket to experience it too. But too many people book blindly without asking why someone enjoyed a destination.

You should always remember to consider your interests when booking a trip, and that what counts as a dream destination for one person doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the same for you. So do some research before you follow through.

Consider Your Budget

Budget is a huge consideration when choosing a destination, though once again, not always something people research before they book flights.

Some destinations are far more budget friendly than others. If you’re traveling without much cash, don’t book flights to London and then realize that hotels start from £200 a night. Do your research first. There’s nothing worse than booking your dream destination and then realizing it’s going to put you into serious debt.

Find out how much transport costs, both to and from the airport, and the cost of getting around during your trip. Research how much you’re likely to spend on accommodation, food, and tours.

And also find out the cost of entrance fees – for instance you might think that Nepal is a cheap country to visit, though the entrance fees to attractions in Kathmandu can put you back a small fortune.

Generate Your Perfect Holiday

To help with holiday decision making process, myperfectholiday.co.uk has created ‘My Perfect Holiday Generator’.

This is an online tool which asks a series of simple questions about your travel preferences, ie whether you would like to go ‘somewhere hot, warm or cold’, whether you’re looking to ‘relax, party on, have an adventure or explore’, and what kind of budget you’re working to. It then makes suggestions for your ideal destination based on the information you input.

  1. Nice write up! We’re always looking for our next spot to visit. I can vouch for budgeting being super important, we did a big road trip and by the end we were running out of funds quickly.

    • Thanks Jim – budget is something which we’ve realized can really quickly get out of hand if you’re not fully aware of the cost, or of the things you’re likely to be doing on a trip. It’s a pretty straightforward tip, but one I think we can always benefit from being re-told :D

Your road trip sounds epic though – I’m sure it was worth every penny!

  2. Smart Tips, Very Inpirations. Nice!!!

    • Thanks! Glad the post was helpful for you :)

  3. An excellent post! Just what I need to plan my next trip. However, I’d like to learn more about how to get free or cheaper trips.

  4. This is so true! I think it’s really important to choose places based on your interests. Someone was asking me recently where they should travel in SE Asia and they didn’t really understand why I asked them so many questions trying to figure out what I think would be best suited for them! Also, didn’t know about entrance fees to activities in Kathmandu! We will have to take that into consideration when we do finally travel there! Thanks for sharing!

    • Absolutely – a lot of people seem to think that travel is a “one destination suits all” type of deal, but it’s not like that at all. It sounds like a simple enough tip, but I think it’s often the straight forward tips that are overlooked.

We totally didn’t realize about the entrance fees in Kathmandu either until we recently researched it for an upcoming trip! We had it on our itinerary for a RTW, and then quickly subbed it out for something else once we realized we probably needed to aim for somewhere more affordable.

  5. We especially focus on the “When to go” part, and try to go to destinations when they are less crowded.

    • Absolutely, us too :) We usually aim for shoulder season because you get the perks of the time of year you’re looking for, though tourists have usually started to go.

  6. Great tips! I have no problems with choosing my destinations but its a great post for all those travellers that are less experienced in travel planning. I am amazed how many times i can see posts on forums people asking about destinations without knowing what is possible to do there, why is important to know when to go etc…

    • Thanks! And yes, absolutely – people seem to think that travel is one of those things which is a “one destination suits all” kind of deal, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We’ve even fallen into that trap sometimes by visiting a destination just because its “the thing to do” – ended up hating our time lol.

  7. Completely agree with considering your interests! I’m not that interested in party life myself and I love exploring nature.

    • Sounds like our travel personalities are the same. So you can safely listen to advice from this site lol :D

  8. Great ideas! We’re always all over the place when planning, mostly because the bucket list is waaay too long but these are great tips to narrow it down!

    • Thanks Cass! We have a bucketlist probably just as long lol! We usually choose destinations based on opportunities which present themselves at the time, helps narrow down that list!

  9. Thanks for the post, as a travel agent this is something that comes second nature to me but I forget how helpful it is to go through these steps.

    • Absolutely Sally – I’ve started to realize that it’s usually the straightforward travel advice which is the most underrated. As we grow more experienced it does come as second nature, though people just jumping into the world of travel often forget :)

      Happy travels!

  10. Great advice! I do these myself – making sure I stay on budget and considering my interests. I’m big on exploring nature so most of my trips include a hike or an outdoor activity.

    • Awesome Janna! We’re big on hiking and outdoor activities too, so generally avoid really huge cities. Choosing a destination based on your interests really does make or break a trip :)
