Düsseldorf is an impressive city. A posh and modern metropolis located along the River Rhine, it is famous for its nightlife, carnival, events, shopping and for fashion and trade fairs.

With cutting edge architecture, eclectic nightlife and an art scene to rival cultural hubs like Paris and Berlin, it typically attracts business travelers. After-all, banking, advertising, and telecommunications are among the fields that have made this one of the largest economic centers in Germany, and brought incredible amounts of wealth here.

Though despite the Armani jackets and corporate atmosphere, there are plenty of exciting and romantic things to do for couples traveling.

Romantic Things to do in Düsseldorf

A Romantic Hotel Room

Being the modern city that it is, there are many luxury hotels in Dusseldorf, and a great way to experience a romantic vacation is to book into one of them. Most of the hotels you’ll be interested in are located on the beautiful Rhine and offer stunning river views as well as a pleasant atmosphere.

The Breidenbacher Hof is one of the most famous in the city, and has rightfully earned a place among Europe’s top hotels. For more than two hundred years since their grand opening in 1812, the Breidenbacher Hof has been centrally situated on the Königsallee, and become known as the ultimate address in luxury and hospitality.

There is something for everyone here, and whether in town for a honeymoon, or traveling on business, there are hotel deals and romance packages to help you make the most of your time in the city.

Spend Time Along the Rhine

One of the best places to find romance in Dusseldorf is along the Rhine. Enjoy a romantic stroll along the banks of the river, or book in for an evening meal at the revolving Gunnewig restaurant at the top of Rhine Tower (Rheinturm).

At 218 metres, this is the city’s tallest building, and one of the more sophisticated of Düsseldorf attractions. Head here during the day for 360 degree panoramic views from the dizzyingly high observation deck, or enjoy a dinner reservation at sunset directly overlooking the Rhine. Once dusk falls, the tower lights up to display the time down the side.

River cruising is also a romantic option, and there are many operators who offer boat trips. In good weather you’ll find the Rhine embankments are packed with people sunbathing beside the water or cycling on by – you can easily hire your own bikes with the nextbike local sharing system.

Indulge in a Spa Treatment

A couple’s getaway is the ideal opportunity to take care of your bodies and minds in a relaxing setting. And one of the best spas to visit is Vabali Spa Düsseldorf.

With 10 saunas, two steam baths, a laconium, two pools and numerous relaxation areas right in the middle of nature, vabali spa Düsseldorf is relaxation center where the body, mind, and soul can recover.

Situated directly on the Elbsee, the extensive sauna grounds offer a wonderful panorama view of the lake with charming Balinese architecture, taking you away to a Far East world across 20,000 square meters.

Just remember to ask if the spa has any essential oils to boost your libido, so you can set the right mood for later!

Visit Benrath Palace

A 200 year old palace with one of the most beautiful garden palaces of the 18th century, Benrath Palace was built as a summer home and hunting lodge for the Elector Carl Theodor. Now a public museum, while the baroque architecture and interiors are spectacular, the 60-hectare gardens offer the most romantic atmosphere.

“In the wooded part of the Benrath Palace park visitors will find many flowering plants growing beneath the canopy of trees and bushes, along with mosses, ferns and grasses.

Most of the wildflowers – including wild arum, wood anemones, sorrel, pilewort, buttercups and dead nettle – bloom white and yellow in the spring before the thick canopy of leaves on the trees and the rich palette of shrubs make the woodland floor too shady.”

Stroll Hand in Hand at Nordpark

There are many different parks throughout Düsseldorf, though Nordpark is one of the city’s most popular attractions. It also makes for a great starting point for a relaxed and romantic evening.

The park features over 4,000 square meters of fountains, sculptures, beautiful trees, decorative flowerbeds, and a stunning Japanese Garden. The Japanese Garden is one of the more secluded parts of the park, perfect for the couple seeking an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Sip Cocktails at a Rooftop Bar

One of the best ways to enjoy a romantic evening in Dusseldorf is with cocktails from the rooftop bar at Me and All Hotels. A cozy and intimate space, with a killer view over the city, the hotel lounge is great place to spend a romantic evening.

There are always lots of lovely people, good sounds, comfortable armchairs and delicious, informal food. And the best bread ever! And when the stage is empty and the party’s over, you can just curl up in one of their wonderful armchairs and admire the panoramic view over the city.

  1. We go to Marcel’s every time we are in town. We always choose it over other restaurants. Service is immaculate and food is perfect. We are always greeted as old friends. It’s great any time of the day, for breakfast, dinner or just the most Delicious Apple strudel. Make sure you have reservation because it’s always packed. I also love the decor, especially over Christmas time. Very romantic.

    • Sounds fabulous Libby – I haven’t been. Will have to stop by next time I’m in town :)

  2. Nordpark looks beautiful :)

    • One of my favorite places :)

  3. Gunnewig restaurant at the top of the Rheinturm is one of the most outstanding restaurants around the world. Nothing beats a revolving restaurant overlooking the city lights for date night – we ordered carpaccio fillet and Arctic char fish in the (starters from €9, mains from €26).

    • Totally agree with you – can’t beat their seafood!

  4. I had never thought of Düsseldorf as a romantic place – really I guess any city with a romantic hotel, spas and a river to walk down could be considered romantic ;)

    • Hopefully we could change your mind :D But yes, you can find romance in most cities if you know where to look :)

  5. Düsseldorf is a perfect city-break destination!

    • Totally agree! Glad you enjoyed the post :)

  6. The old town is by no means large, but if you’re planning a night out there are more nightspots than you could ever hope to visit.

    • We’re not really huge nightlife people, so didn’t explore much of that scene, but might have to try and venture out a bit more on our next trip :)

  7. I can’t imagine a more enchanting or romantic spot than the Kasteel Wittem. It is a magnificient medevial castle, surrounded by an ancient moat and a picturesque park, The web site pictures do not do it full justice.

We stayed in the round tower room that had a lace-curtain-enclosed bed and a huge bath with tub (big enough for two) that overlooked the moat where black and white swans floated.

If you book, be certain to tell them it is your anniversary and you will receive “special treatment”—do request the tower room.

    • Sounds incredible Georgine! Thanks for sharing your experience :)

  8. South of D’dorf on the Rhine is the lovely picturesque village of St. Goreshaven.

There’s a really cool castle you can stay in that overlooks the town/river/valley. They’ll even pick you up at the train station.

    • I’ll have to check it out on our next trip. Thanks for the tip Steve :)

  9. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been planning to bring my girlfriend in Dusseldorf. Lovely.

    • You’re welcome Daniel, so glad the post could help. Have an amazing trip with your girlfriend :)
