Luxury lies in simplicity. There is nothing better than arriving at the airport light handed with just a leather holdall in one hand and your tickets and a passport in the other.

But before all that, the agony of packing rarely can be escaped. How and what to pack for a luxurious getaway? This question is going to be answered today!

How to Pack for a Luxury Weekend Away

The Right Bag – Half of The Work Done

A bag that can take a beating and still retain it’s classy look, while lasting for a very long time.

First of all, pick the bag of your choice. It’s like starting with a clean canvass and filling in the picture up step by step.

If your getaway is short, a good old weekender bag might be exactly what you need. This won’t burden you out as suitcase would, and not to mention it will easily fit into a hand-luggage compartment on a plane!

You should choose a bag that is spacious enough to fit all your necessities but compact enough to look smart and polished. Holdall bags are very versatile because of their timeless and simplistic design so they will be able to serve you on more occasions than just wandering around airports.

The best men’s holdall bags I’ve managed to find can be found on this page. The same company also sells various bags for women.

Clothing – Keep it Simple and Timeless

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The simpler your outlook is on clothing, the easier it will be to pack and to enjoy the trip itself.

You never know where a weekend getaway might bring you, but having a classic set of clothing and accessories to match will never disappoint. Leave the urge to experiment with your fashion at home and pack only the most versatile and timeless pieces you own.

Neutral colours, good quality materials and classic garments will save your trip. A couple of button-downs, neutrally coloured dresses, polo shirts a v-neck or two and a couple of good fitting bottoms will set you for success.

And always be ready to dress up. After-all, this is a luxurious trip! You don’t have to cram the ball gown or a tux in, but don’t forget a pair of dressy oxfords if you’re a gentleman, or a classic pair of pumps if you’re a lady.

Other Essentials – How to Choose What to Pack?

Checklists are so underrated these days, and we don’t quite understand why. Nothing feels better than literally ticking all the boxes once you’re done packing!

Make a list for all of your toiletries, makeup and jewellery that you might want to take with you, and do this at least the night before. If you need inspiration to create the ultimate checklist, have a look at advice from Smart Lemur.

Pack with your own convenience in mind, and make sure that your choices will ensure your comfort during your luxurious stay.

Ask yourself how easily one or another item can be substituted and how important it is in your routine? If it is not as crucial and can be easily substituted, you might reconsider packing it with you.

And not to mention, always save a little space for a bottle of your favourite perfume, because you are never fully ready without a spritz of it (when we say little, we mean little enough to pass airport security).

  1. I like that you stressed that simplicity is the key. Understated elegance, absolutely :)

    • Absolutely Margret, I live and breathe simplicity :D!

  2. The right bag is definitely half the battle, I really enjoy tote bags for weekend trips, they’re so light and easy to pack, also very flexible in being able to mould into tight airport carryon spaces.

    • Tote bags are great. I do like bags with a lot of pockets and organizers, as I find my things get jumbled pretty easily when I’m using a bag that you just throw everything in, but I often use packing cubes now if I’m using a tote and they’ve been amazing for keeping the bag organized :)

  3. I’ve tried taking carryon only but even on short weekend trips, I don’t know how I do it, but have to fill a suitcase. I’m not good at light packing so I don’t even try anymore!

    • Each to their own, ultimately you have to do what feels right for you. If you’ve given it a try and you don’t like it there’s nothing wrong with that :)

  4. YES on the checklist. I print one off for every trip and my wife thinks it’s ridiculous and takes me to town on it, but we never forget anything. Glad I’m not the only one :D

    • We should start a club for checklist and spreadsheet nerds. Lol I’ll be the founding member :D

  5. “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Love this.

    • Thanks Kori! Word I try to live by :)

  6. If you like to shop, and are going someplace where you can buy things cheap, pack clothes that you don’t mind giving away.

Leave the clothes with anyone that you think can make use of them and then you’ll have more room for your souvenir clothing.

Just make sure you’re not giving someone your rags.

    • Thats a great idea Torrie, what a wonderful way to give back to the local community in need if you’re going to be donating them anyway :)

  7. I know it may sound silly, but I pack the greek way, appx. half an hour before leaving my house for the airport, even if it’s a month’s travel!

    • Hey if it works for you that’s awesome!

  8. My son traveled to Germany years ago with a school group and they had a travel expert give us advice on packing. She showed us to lay your clothes flat and then roll them up instead of folding them. This keeps them from wrinkling/creasing so much in the suitcase and from sliding to one end while transporting when laid close together. It helped him get lots of “rolls” packed tightly and take more things in one suitcase. I have always put at least one days change of clothes, night clothes and personal toiletries in a carry-on bag when flying, so if my luggage was lost, I still had the necessities until I could purchase replacements.

    • I’m a big fan of rolling vs folding too, it really does mean there’s so much more space available in a suitcase!

And great tip on carrying a spare set of essentials in your carryon, I try to do the same, and it’s definitely come in handy once or twice when my bags have been delayed!

  9. I never travel without Ziplock bags! Stuff some in your luggage. They always come handy.

    • Ziplock bags are the best! I agree that they always come in handy, great tip :)

  10. Golf bags don’t count as luggage, so I stuff as much stuff in there as possible, frees up space in my suitcase.

    • I didn’t know that, cool tip Caleb!

  11. Always roll items when packing, saves them ending up needing an iron.

    • Absolutely, I’m a big fan of the roll vs fold method :)

  12. Yes to writing a check list. I check that bad boy and I check it often.

    • Fabulous Cameron, they really do come in handy :)
