If you’ve been following this blog for a while now, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking I have an issue with scenic flights. From the Swiss Alps, to the Blue Mountains, and now Australia’s iconic Gold Coast, I’ve never made it through a whole plane ride. On reaching 12,000 feet I’ve always opted for the quickest route back down to the ground. Free falling at 200 kph after having jumped mid flight. Where is the best Skydiving in Australia?

But I truly can’t stop. The air rushes into your face and your heart starts racing. As the adrenalin rush kicks in, you feel like you’re floating on a cushion of air. The silence is amazing, the view is sensational, and as the initial shock of the free fall quickly wears off your fear disappears, replaced with an intense and exhilarating thrill of soaring through the air.

I’m addicted to the jump. I crave the adrenaline at this point. Skydiving is an electrifying experience far more thrilling and intense than any sort of drug. Though I had never before jumped over the coast and landed on the beach.

Skydive Onto The Beach

Gold Coast Skydive

Gold Coast Skydive is the only skydive centre on the Gold Coast. We landed on the beautiful and iconic sandy Kirra beach. This is one of the few remaining family owned businesses within the skydiving industry and their focus on fun, customer service and above all else, safety, is what sets them above the rest.

We took off from Gold Coast International airport amongst the passenger jets, which offers it’s own unique experience and that’s before we had left the ground. We then took in the breathtaking scenery on the flight to height. The view of the Gold Coast’s beaches and Surfers Paradise skyline are stunning beyond comparison. Skydive over the beach

We were strapped to a beautiful stranger, and once the aircraft reached the drop point we leaped from the plane. It was the adrenaline filled ride of a lifetime, rushing through the air in free-fall towards paradise.

As the parachute opened it became peaceful and quiet as we floated through the cloud cover to the sandy beaches of Kirra. This was yet another chance to take in the beautiful views of the Gold Coasts never ending beaches whilst reveling in the feeling of having left your comfort zone behind and living life to the fullest. 1. That’s great! I’ve only been skydiving once – it was my 28th bday gift to myself. It was one of the most amazing experiences and I’ve been wanting to go again since. Maybe for my 42nd bday this year!

    • Thanks Monik! Awesome that you loved your Skydive too! I hope you have the chance for a second jump this year :) Happy birthday!

  2. Wow, great photos! I’m surprised you didn’t have to wear a jump suit…but then I guess it’s way warmer in Australia!
I did a skydive in New Zealand about 18monhs ago (wow, time flies) and I loved it! I definitely want to do another one…hopefully I won’t be terrified next time so can enjoy it more! I can see how you have got addicted…maybe you could become a tandem jumper and do it nearly every day! :)

    • Thanks Gemma! Though I can’t take all the credit for the photos – that was the amazing team at Gold Coast Skydive – amazing what GoPro’s can capture nowadays!

We were surprised that we didn’t jump in a jump suit too, was the first time for me without one, though the weather was perfect, so we really didn’t need it. They told us they only pull the jump suits out when it’s cold.

Hope you have the chance to jump again soon too! I did find that on the second jump I was able to relax a lot more since I had experienced it before. Then it just becomes amazing fun!

I would love to become a tandem jumper…going to start trying to rack up a few more jumps!

    • Thanks for the tip Anita! Thats what I love about Skydiving so much, it technically combines both skydiving and paragliding after the parachute goes up :) Best of both worlds!

Awesome photo – Turkey looks like a fab place to do it!

  3. Oh my god! That was intense. I’m afraid of heights and couldn’t even watch that, let alone think about going for it. Do they have any drugs on hand that would convince a scaredy cat like me to jump? Either way, you’re awesome Meg for doing this. Great video and post!

    • Crazy right!! I was terrified the first time I jumped (Switzerland), like literally terrified, but I kept reminding myself that I was strapped to someone who did this professionally every day as their job, and they didn’t want to get hurt on the way down, so I probably wouldn’t either!!

And I LOVED it! I actually paid for that jump the day before so I couldn’t chicken out on the day haha, though I’m so glad I did, it’s seriously one of the most amazing experiences ever, and the adrenaline will keep you buzzing for weeks.

The other thing too, is that when you’re that high up, the ground is so far away that it’s actually really difficult to gauge your height, which really helps with being afraid of heights. And it happens so fast that you don’t really have too much time to think. Promise it’s amazing and that you’ll love it!

  4. That’s a great video, it captures the excitement perfectly.

    • Thanks Rhonda! Definitely value in paying a bit extra for the photo and video memories :)

  5. This is one amazing experience Megan! I’ve been looking into sky diving recently and all I need is a little more courage to actually get myself to take that leap. Thanks for sharing your story, it’s great! Any other death defying activities you’d want to recommend?

    • Hi Marcus – I can highly recommend Skydiving, it’s one of the most amazing experiences and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life. Promise you it’s worthwhile!

I’ve just published our Gold Coast itinerary which has recommendations for other adventure activities too. We also did jet boating, sand tobogganing, zip lining horse riding, and kayaked over shipwrecks in transparent kayaks. Was an adventurous trip! Check out the itinerary here.

      Happy travels!

  6. Just judging from your facial expressions, skydiving must have been an amazingly heart-stopping experience. At least, the beach is a nice place to land.

    • The beach was a very unique place to land! And yes, absolutely loved the experience. Pretty much so that I plan on heading back for more :D

  7. Dang girl…. you are my freakin idol. My bestest asked me to do a jump this year and as I have made a pact with myself to say YES to every opportunity that arises, I now find myself in the sticky predicament of hurling myself to the ground at a million miles an hour. Guess if I am going to do it, it should be over the beach. Not such a bad last thing to see before dying. Lol! :)

    • Haha I promise you’ll love it! The beach is an amazing spot for it, because the views are just incredible. And once you’re actually up there, you’re so high that it’s pretty difficult to gauge a sense of height. The ground looks so far away that this does help with the whole fear of falling thing :)

Have a fab jump! Can’t wait to see photos and your vid!

  8. I really enjoyed your skydiving video. Although I had to use my VPN because in Germany this stupid organization called GEMA has absolutely no concept of fair use, and flagged your video for containing copyrighted music. It’s ok, smart people know how to get around it. I would really like to try skydiving. What is the impact like when you land? How hard do you hit the ground when your chute opens up? I think the rest of it is totally doable. Also what did it cost to skydive?

    • Thanks Ken! And thanks for the note about GEMA in Germany – I had no idea. Will try and start sourcing commercial free music if I can :)

Glad you enjoyed the video though – Skydiving is really a blast! There’s not actually much impact on landing at all; because half of your flight is essentially parasailing once the parachute goes up, you glide slowly to the ground and it’s a very smooth landing. Doesn’t hurt at all, you just need to bring your legs to 90 degrees and you land softly – one of my jumps we’ve come in so slowly that I was able to land on my feet in a bit of a slow run.

Cost depends on which location you’re at. I did a jump in Switzerland which was very expensive, spent around $500 for the jump + photos and video. Where-as jumps in the States you can find for around $200. Jumps here on the Gold Coast average $365 (AUD). Photos and videos are going to be a pretty big expense, but it’s something you’ll never regret :)

Let me know if you have any other Q’s on the experience :)

    • Thanks for getting back to me Meg! Why am I not surprised that the Swiss jump was 2.5x as expensive as in the US? I was there once with family and at that time they all had USD, which was really weak at the time. It was 1:1 and just going to lunch and ordering appetizers was 30CHF per person. It was insane. I never wanted to be back in Germany so much in my life.

  9. My dream one day I can jump with a parachute … This is one amazing experience

    • Definitely something you’ll remember forever! I hope you have the opportunity to experience it soon :)

  10. I went skydiving in Central Florida. It was such a rush! Wish we could have landed on a beach though lol

    • Definitely consider jumping again if you make it to the Gold Coast then … kind of fun to land on the sand :D!

  11. Hi Meg… what I want to say is only “you are too brave”.
I cannot imagine how I will feel if I got a chance to do skydive. It maybe can stop my lung to work then more breath?

    • Hi Hajar, thanks for stopping by our blog! If you get the chance to skydive, the adrenalin is a crazy thing! I’m not sure about skydiving with an unlucky lung, but I did find this article (click here) which might offer some helpful insight, it’s written by someone who jumps with very bad asthma.

      Hope it helps!

  12. Hey,

Must be amazing experience although the jump can be scary alone.
    Glad you have safe landing.

    • I was lucky to be traveling with 3 friends this time, but yes, would definitely be scary to be doing it alone! It does help though knowing that you’re strapped to a professional who does this multiple times a day and doesn’t want to get hurt either :D

  13. Wow! That was intense. i belive it’s a wonderful feeling.i wish i can one try

    • Really is such an intense and exhilarating feeling! I hope you have the chance to organize a jump soon :) Happy holidays!

  14. Thanks for sharing your experience. I think we all should try it once it will be great adventure.

    • You’re welcome Ben, I agree I think it’s definitely something to try at least once in every lifetime!
